Communion is a sacrament Jesus called the church to practice. What does it mean, why is it important?

Jesus’ encounter with a group of homeward-bound disciples changes their perspective on life, death, and even home. As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ together on Easter Sunday we consider what it means to call this life, “home.”

On Palm Sunday, the people cried, “Hosanna! Hosanna!” This wasn’t a cheer for Jesus’ arrival but a desperate plea for salvation. This encounter between Jesus and the people invites us to consider the salvation we may need.

Most of us are happy to get past school and teachers. We don’t miss the days of homework and studying. Jesus, though, is a different kind of teacher for us. What could happen if we claimed Jesus as our teacher?

Jesus was a marvelous storyteller, weaving everyday items and events into his teaching. As he approached the last days of his life he told many stories to help people find life. The story in Luke 19, is difficult to hear, but powerful if we’re willing to live the story.

The old tent revival song reminds us, “What a friend we have in Jesus,” but to call Jesus your friend seems quaint. Particularly when we’ve never met him. But claiming the gift of friendship with Jesus can give us a new view on life.
