Episode 21 - The Party Line on Herzog’s visit and the resist-able rise of One Nation ft Jasmine Duff
This ep starts by returning to the US rebellion against ICE, which has now expanded to the national scale via the January 30 day of action. Cities across the country were shut down due to street protests, student walkouts, and various types of legal and wildcat (that is, illegal!) strike actions against ICE and the Trump administrations’ cruelty. We then invite the irrepressible Jasmine Duff on the pod to talk about the situation in Palestine ahead of the upcoming Herzog visit. Jasmine is both the excellent VS candidate for Footscray and the national co-convenor of Students for Palestine. Make sure you attend these vital protests that are taking place on the 9th of Feb in every city in Australia! We need to shut the whole country down when this criminal lands. Finally we take a detailed look at recent polling by Redbridge that found One Nation is now on a stunning 26%, well ahead of the Coalition on 19%. We look at why this despicably racist figure has become so popular and what the left can and should do about it.
Huge thanks to our tireless editors Charlie Wardrop and Persephone Waxman, and special guest editor Auley Ryan.

Episode 20 - The Party Line on Hanson’s Invasion day antics and the Minneapolis uprising against ICE
Bullshit has been confirmed as an essential part of the pod by popular acclaim, and so this ep begins with a healthy serving. So we start by exploring Omar’s first experience of Jordan’s fame, the quality of flooring in the office, and other essential issues facing the nation. The headlines take another look at US imperialism in relation to both Venezuela and Iran, before looking at the unholy alliance of Coles and The Australian, and the impending collapse of the Nationals. The first of our main segments looks at the massive Invasion day demos around the country, the much smaller fascist mobilisations, and the literal bomb thrown at the Invasion day protest in Perth. We then look at the inspirational resistance to ICE in Minneapolis, where 3000 thugs have confronted tens of thousands of students, workers and activists standing against the violent deportations of migrants. The general strike on January 23 was a clear turning point, leading businesses to complain about the disruption and Trump to lead (a partial but much welcomed) RETREAT! As of now the struggle remains ongoing and we send our full solidarity to the people of Minneapolis.

Episode 19 - The Party Line on the murder of Kumanjayi Walker: A conversation with Kate Wild, author of The Red House
This special episode of The Party Line features award winning journalist and author Kate Wild talking about her new book, The Red House: Kumanjayi Walker and Zachary Rolfe. Together we explore the fatal 2019 shooting of Warlpiri teenager Kumanjayi Walker by Constable Zachary Rolfe in Yuendumu, examining the event's connection to Australia's history of structural, institutional racism. We look at the systematic violence of the criminal justice system, and how it punishes Indigenous people generally, and Indigenous youth in particular, for being poor and Black.
We encourage our readers to grab a copy of the book to learn more about the horrific events surrounding the killing of Kumanjayi Walker. We also recommend The Tall Man by Chloe Hooper as a similarly enraging and moving account of an earlier black death in custody.

Episode 18 - The party line on Invasion day, deaths in custody, and creeping fascism
Omar made his glorious return this week, though quickly made it clear he hadn’t bothered listening to the last ep. (Probably for the best, he was easily replaced.) This ep is an Invasion day special, and looks at the past present and future of Aboriginal oppression and resistance in Australia. To help us go through it all, we invited Indigenous socialist Oskar Martin on to the pod (and we thought he was pretty excellent). We begin discussing the roots of Indigenous oppression, including the frontier wars, the massacres, and why stealing the land was so important to the early Australian capitalists. We then look at the sordid history of stolen generations and the genocidal intentions behind the plans to disrupt and dislocate Aboriginal people from their lands, communities and cultures. Finally, we look at the incredible resistance of Aboriginal people backed up by socialists and trade unionists, a proud history that is often glossed over by liberals today. To wrap things up we take a brief look at the appalling new hate speech laws passed by Parliament this week, and their chilling implications for freedom of speech and assembly, and the right to criticise Israel.

Episode 17 - The party line on ICE, Adelaide Writers Week and Hate Speech
This week the gang voted Omar off the Island. Producers had a surprise up their sleeves, with Josh Lees as a special guest. We discussed the violent killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agents, and the full throated support for the murderer from JD Vance, Trump and the US regime. We then discussed the fallout from the removal of Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah from Adelaide Writers’ Week, and the solidarity she received from 180+ other guests and writers. The ruling class offensive against the Palestine movement continues, with the Royal Commission announced, plus the introduction of hate speech laws that give the Attorney General the powers to prohibit organisations, and punishment of 15 years for people who support them.

Episode 16 - The party line on the Bondi Royal Commission, Venezuela and Iran
A big one this week. The unhinged attacks on the Palestine movement and Anthony Albanese have continued for another week, and so your faithful hosts do their duty to take up the cudgels against the lies once again. Our highlight is a Canberra Times editorial calling for “rabble rousers” to be forcibly brought before a House of un-Israelian Activities Committee. It takes us some time to respond to a bunch of the rubbish being put forward to justify this McCarthyist witch hunt by some of the most racist scum in Australia. But once that’s done, we take a look at Trump’s appalling aggression against Venezuela and what it says about international politics at the moment, before wrapping up with a look at the heroic protest and strike wave sweeping Iran right now with Iranian socialist Bella Beiraghi.

Episode 15 - The party line on how Bondi is being weaponised against Palestine ft Amy Remeikis
As the dust settles on the horrific Bondi shooting, the nature of the bigoted onslaught has become clearer. This episode starts by looking at the tirade of lies and far-right propaganda spread by The Australian and other media outlets. Given Jillian Segal’s prominence, we do a little digging into her family’s history as managers of hyper-exploitative diamond mining companies in Apartheid South Africa as well as her links with racist lobby group, Advance Australia. To get a deeper look at the media landscape of the backlash we interview journalist Amy Remeikis on the media response to Bondi and how they have normalised racism and anti-Palestinian politics. We then take a look at the appalling attacks on rights going on in the UK, where the government has banned Palestine Action and has sought to criminalise support for the Palestinian people and their resistance to genocide, a direction that Australian state and federal governments appear to be moving in. NSW Premier Chris Minns gets a particular shout-out, as a key protagonist in the moves to censor pro-Palestine speech and increase authoritarianism and anti-protest laws in Australia. Finally, we explore the tensions in the ALP around this issue and why Albanese has invited the Israeli President, Isaac “no innocent civilians in Gaza” Herzog, to visit Australia.

Episode 13 - The Bondi massacre and the right-wing backlash
The massacre in Bondi struck the heart of decent people across Australia. It was shocking to see the murder of 15 Jewish people by suspected gunmen with links to ISIS. This special episode was recorded in the first days after the event, and tries to unpack the first responses by the media, the ALP, LNP, Pauline Hanson and Bob Katter. In general, the horror of the attack has been amplified by the racist and anti-Palestinian response, which seeks to manipulate the tragedy for political ends. Benjamin Netanyahu’s absurd claim that Australia’s recognition of Palestinian statehood is somehow to blame was typical of this reactionary tidal wave. Also significant has been NSW Premier Chris Minn’s decision to rush through even more anti-protest laws under the guise of solidarity with the Jewish community.

Episode 12 - The Party Line on Venezuela, US Imperialism, and NUS
Big news this week: Anneke has been adopted! By her big sister that is. We discuss all that before moving on to headlines, including what the Annika Wells expense scandal reveals about the culture of entitlement that runs through Parliament. The main breaking story that was unfolding as we were recording was the US hijacking of a Venezuelan oil tanker, which follows months of deadly strikes on boats that have killed nearly 100 civilians. This leads on to a chat about Trump’s new National Security Strategy, which declares his intent to see the US engage in aggressive operations throughout Latin America to reassert US hegemony over the ‘western hemisphere’, while also promoting the great replacement theory and other fascist ideas and organisations throughout Europe. We wrap up with some goss from the National Union of Students National Conference in Ballarat, which saw Labor Party members try (and fail) to lock out socialist party members from national office.
