Patterns of conflict...
Larry Addington's "The Patterns of War Since the Eighteenth Century" has been a staple of U.S. Army professional military education since its first edition was published in 1984. This subsequent edition brings the narrative to the conclusion of DESERT STORM. Current events are not however the strength of the book. Instead, it offers a concise and highly readable survey of European methods of warfare beginning with the American Revolution.
From the American Revolution, the narrative proceeds through the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, the Wars of German Unification, the First and Second World Wars, and the hot wars of the Cold War. The text is supplemented with a selection of maps and photographs. Various battles and leaders get their due mention, but the focus is on how the changing roles of technology, tactics, logistics, and strategy impact the practice of warfare. This European-centric point of view won't be for everyone, but the perspective is invaluable for the military professional and the students of warfare and international relations. Strongly recommended.
Lot of history no real paterns
For summing up two centuries of history this book does a good job. But the title is misleading. Nowhere in the book there is a real view on warfare paterns during these two centuries. It keeps on summing up historical events until the end. Reading between the lines someone can seen some paterns and some occasional remarks from the author serve as a reminder of the goal set out in the beginning of the book and the title. Until WOII there is some discussion on weapons and tactics used but after that we take giant steps towards the first gulf war. Maybe the ambition was to large. In two centuries of warfare we came from de rifled musket to precision guided munitions. A limitation on landwarfare or naval warfare would have been beter, together with a more structured aproach to weapons and tactics.
Mandatory Text for U.S. Army Majors
As the title indicates, the Army's Command & General Staff College requires students to read Patterns of War in the core history class. Professors can make best use of this book as a supplement to a more thorough analysis into military history. Addington surveys the history of warfare from the evolution of national warfare in France and the U.S. in the late 1700's to operations in Desert Storm.
This book will not provide a lot of depth or analysis, simply the basic facts and a good list of sources from which to perform further research. If a student or enthusiast of history, use Patterns of War to gain a cursory understanding of many of the conflicts in the last two centuries. Or, use it as a basis to launch into further study and learning.
