    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
North Korea has long been the butt of jokes, and it has been a longstanding target of international criticism. But the startling satellite image was anything but amusing, for it demonstrated the truly catastrophic conditions North Koreans find themselves in.
North Korea would be horrific enough if it was a fictional place, but its nuclear weapons program is all too real. On September 17, 2017, President Donald Trump tweeted another nickname of the type he has infamously coined for his opponents: "I spoke with President Moon of South Korea last night. Asked him how Rocket Man is doing. Long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!"
The "Rocket Man" in question, of course, was none other than the notoriously brutal and wildly erratic North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un. Capitalizing on the viral nature of the controversial tweet, Trump repeated the nickname just a few days later in his speech before the UN General Assembly. He warned the congregation of fidgety ambassadors about the grave threats posed by North Korea's depraved regime: "The United States had great strength and patience, but if forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea.... Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime."
Needless to say, the rumors regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities and the murky nature of the regime have understandably left many a nation and their leaders on the edges of their seats. Experts insist that the Iranian propaganda program, which many say out-rival even North Korea's, is chiefly responsible for entrenching into its masses a resentment of the West, particularly the United States and Israel, and their liberal ideals. Unlike North Korea, which proudly walls itself off from the rest of civilization, the Iranian propaganda mills are constantly refurbishing themselves so as to appeal to a younger and more impressionable demographic.
Since the Iranian Revolution, Western nations and their intelligence agencies have struggled to fully grasp what goes on in Iran. The last decade has featured the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists, the use of sophisticated cyber-attacks like Stuxnet, the construction of a hidden enrichment facility underneath a mountain, ongoing arguments over the nature of Irans nuclear program, efforts to determine whether there was potential procurement and testing of materials that would be used in nuclear weapons, debates over ballistic missiles, and a 2015 agreement between Iran and several world powers that remains a controversial issue to this day. There is even substantial concern that Iran and North Korea are jointly working on their nuclear programs, with Iranian scientists witnessing North Korean nuclear weapons tests and North Korean scientists in Iran overseeing research and development.

Title: Work for Giants: The Campaign and Battle of Tupelo/Harrisburg, Mississippi, June-July 1864
    Author: Thomas E. Parson
    Narrator: Donnie Sipes
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-07-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
During the summer of 1864 a Union column, commanded by Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith, set out from Tennessee with a goal that had proven impossible in all prior attempts - to find and defeat the cavalry under the command of Confederate major general Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest's cavalry was the greatest threat to the long supply line feeding Sherman's armies as they advanced on Atlanta.
Smith marched at the head of his "gorillas", veteran soldiers who were fresh from the Red River Campaign. Aside from diverting Confederate attention away from Sherman, Smith's orders were to destroy Southern railroads and confront Forrest in Mississippi. Just weeks earlier, a similar Union expedition had met with disaster at the Battle of Brice's Crossroads, perhaps the greatest victory of Forrest's military career.
Joined by reinforcements led by Lt. Gen. Stephen Dill Lee, Forrest and his men were confident and their morale had never been higher. However, for two weeks, Smith outmarched, outfought, and outmaneuvered the team of Lee and Forrest. In three days of bitter fighting, culminating in the battle at Harrisburg, the Confederates suffered a staggering defeat. Forrest's corps was devastated. He and his men would recover but would never regain their earlier strength, nor would they ever again prove a serious threat to veteran Union infantry.
Work for Giants focuses on the details of this overlooked campaign and the efforts, post-battle and postwar, to minimize the outcome and consequences of an important Union victory. Parson draws heavily from previously untapped diaries, letters and journals, and eyewitness accounts, bringing to life the oppressive heat, cruel depredations, and brutal combat the soldiers encountered, and the stoic humor they used to endure them.
The book is published by The Kent State University Press.

    Faceoff
This book is excellent. It is both good, objective history and fun reading. An unbiased view of the Battle of Tupelo has long been needed. After Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Grant and Sherman, Nathan Bedford Forrest probably has more name recognition than any general in the Civil War. He has become an icon, especially in the South, west of the Appalachians. As such, he and his troopers have acquired a reputation as an invincible force. This battle between a detachment of troops and accompanying cavalry led by Union Gen. AJ Smith and Confederate Cavalry under the command of Gen. Stephen Lee with Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest leading the troopers during most of the action has been called a victory for the North, a victory for the South, or a draw depending on who is telling the story. This book presents the facts and draws a logical conclusion.
By June 1864 Mississippi was no longer the focus of the North's efforts. West of the Appalachians the major strategic goal of the Union Army was the capture of Atlanta, being undertaken by Gen. Sherman's command. The campaign that led to the battle of Tupelo was designed to keep the Confederate forces in Mississippi, especially those of Gen. Forrest, occupied so they would not be available for raids on General Sherman's vulnerable supply line that ran from Nashville through Chattanooga to Sherman's Army in Georgia. The destruction of Forrest's cavalry was a secondary goal.

  • Fighting in the Great Crusade Audiobook by Gregory A. Daddis

Title: Fighting in the Great Crusade
Subtitle: An 8th Infantry Artillery Officer in World War II
    Author: Gregory A. Daddis
    Narrator: Clyde Walker
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-07-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
Fighting in the Great Crusade combines the terse clarity of George E. Schwend's World War II combat journals with Gregory Daddis's expert commentary on the greater context of that conflict. The result is the rare military work that counterpoints historical and strategic analysis against a foxhole-level view of the war in Europe as US soldiers experienced it.
Schwend's story, which typifies that of young American citizen soldiers on whom the Allied cause depended, follows a draftee through the rigors of basic training and Officer Candidate School and into the grim theater of the European campaigns in 1944 and 1945. The accretion of detail forms a grittily realistic day-to-day account of military life, while Daddis's expansive historical backdrop invests with poignance even such routines as Schwend's faithful attendance at movie screenings as the soldier - and listeners - anticipate the fateful Normandy invasion.
Schwend observes that despite the rigors of his training nothing could have prepared him or his comrades for the savagery of the actions in which they fought.
The book is published by Louisiana State University Press.

Untapped Diary of an 8th Division Officer.
Anyone interested in American history in general, or American military history in particular, will appreciate the discovery of an untapped diary of an American soldier. Gregory Daddis has unlocked one such diary of a young artillery officer in World War II. What is more, Daddis offers a history of one of the least mentioned, "work horse," divisions, as Russell F. Weigley discribes it in the Foreword, in the European Theater: the U.S. 8th Infantry Division. Daddis reproduces the daily journal entries of George Schwend verbatum. Schwend hides his emotions and sticks to logging his daily routine. Other than his obvious love for his fiance Jean at home, we never know his fears, hopes, aspirations or opinions. Yet the entries shed interesting insight to the training of the U.S. Army (Gen. Eisenhower called the 8th Division the best trained unit to enter the ETO). From the cultural aspect, Schwend lists every movie he saw in three years in the Army. In addition, Schwend's log shows the postal system during the war years, was quite efficient. According to Schwend's daily weather discriptions, except for scattered days, perhaps the weather in Europe (and the 8th Division was in the thick of it) was not abnormally cold as some historians have claimed. Throughout the book, Daddis placed Schwend and the 266 days the 8th Division saw combat from Normandy, Brittany, the bitter Hurtgen Forest, the crossings of the Roer and Rhine Rivers and the horror encountered at the Wobbelin concentration camp in overall perspective. As a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, Major Daddis offers some analysis of his own on combined operations, the role of artillery, and the command structure of the U.S. Army in World War II. Daddis draws from a wealth of sources including some unpublished manuscripts housed at the West Point library, used here for the first time. My only criticism is the book is too short.

starsGreat book and I got mine at a great deal.
The wisdom of the explanations of the arrangements for and the implementation of the incursion are the top I've read. The authors style is very easy to read and hard to put down.
My first book here and great one.
I first read this book some years ago and it has not lost its appropriateness. I have caught some say there is a certain amount of monotony but it did not trouble me.
    Mullberries
I have read quite a few books on D-Day before, but this author has delivered information on a subject that is regularly overlooked or given short shrift. So many points to discuss but you need to listen to it yourself.
A certain guide for history lovers.
I am fond of war history so in search of my thrust I came here and get this audible for me. I am very happy after listening to it. The author provided the details in such a way that I got everything what I was in search. I would recommend it for everyone.

    impressive and informing
Impressive and informing book! How often have people like us--those who enjoy reading and studying history/war--learned a considerable amount of new knowledge from reading new history works? We piece together new bits and, at the end, we have come away with some new dates, or interesting anecdotes to historical figures/situations. This is really a great book to read and recommend to others!
    Great Short Read!
I really enjoyed this mini-edition... I like the perspective the author is writing from. I don't feel force feed content from any particular bias or way of thinking. My favorite part of the book: The Battle of Waterloo in chapter 6 really delves into great content of the historic battle. Great book to gain knowledge on some historic battles!

    Title: Air Force Blue
Subtitle: The RAF in World War Two - Spearhead of Victory
    Author: Patrick Bishop
    Narrator: Tim Frances
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-21-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
In a return to sweeping social history of wartime, Patrick Bishop - author of best-selling Fighter Boys and Bomber Boys - explores the lives and wartime experiences of thousands of men and women who served in all units of the air force, to mark the centenary of the RAF in 2018.
On 1st April 2018, the Royal Air Force will be 100 years old - a short life by military standards but an extraordinarily important and eventful one.
From the start it was special, standing sometimes awkwardly but always proudly a little apart from the existing services. It was a product of the modern age, whose fortunes depended on ever-more sophisticated machines and the right calibre of men to fly them and to keep them airborne.
Its achievements between 1939 and 1945 - when it was Britain's last line of defence and the spearhead of its counterattack - were central to the entire war effort. During these years one in four of those in uniform wore air force blue, and the ethos of the RAF was indistinguishable from the spirit of the nation.
Following his best-selling books Fighter Boys and Bomber Boys, Airforce Blue tells personal stories of those who served, using the letters, diaries and memoirs of the participants to create a true picture of what it was like to be a pilot, a navigator, a gunner, a fitter or a WAAF ops room clerk. It re-creates the reality of operations, whether wheeling over Kent in a Spitfire in 1940, rumbling towards the Ruhr in a Halifax in 1942 or looking down from the cockpit of a Liberator at the grey corrugated waters of the North Atlantic in 1943. It will also light up the humanity of the participants at every level - their values and motivations, their desires and ambitions.
Air Force Blue is a substantial work of history, a monument to the wartime RAF as a whole and a must-buy for the descendants of the million-plus men and women from not just Britain but Canada, Australia and New Zealand who served.
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for Patrick Bishop: "I know of no more thoughtful nor yet more moving study of their achievement." (Max Hastings, The Sunday Telegraph)
"Deeply humane, lucidly written and powerful...Bishop, a war correspondent, has a keen eye for the stresses and strains of the job these boys did.... All this bravery, and the way of life that supported it, are faithfully recorded in Bishop's refreshingly unpretentious account." (Michael Burleigh, The Sunday Times)
"This is the best kind of military history - the kind in which the author never loses sight of the impact of war on its victims, German as well as British, and those who were left behind. Bomber Boys will remind the survivors that they and their lost comrades are not forgotten. And it reminds the rest of us what their war was all about." (Daniel Johnson, Evening Standard)

A different view of the RAF in WWII.
I enjoyed this history of the RAF in WWII, some may say it is superficial but I think it really captures the essence of the time that made the RAF come of age and be the best it can be.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 39 mins
    Language: English

    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
"It is both the duty and the tradition of the Royal Navy to engage the enemy wherever there is water to float a ship." - Admiral Sir Henry Jackson
World War I, also known in its time as the "Great War" or the "War to End all Wars", was an unprecedented holocaust in terms of its sheer scale. Fought by men who hailed from all corners of the globe, it saw millions of soldiers do battle in brutal assaults of attrition, which dragged on for months with little to no respite. Tens of millions of artillery shells and untold hundreds of millions of rifle and machine gun bullets were fired in a conflict that demonstrated man's capacity to kill each other on a heretofore unprecedented scale, and as always, such a war brought about technological innovation at a rate that made the boom of the Industrial Revolution seem stagnant. World War I was the first truly industrial war, and it created a paradigm which reached its zenith with World War II, and towards which virtually all equipment, innovation, and training were dedicated throughout the Cold War and the remainder of the 20th century. To this day, modern warfare remains synonymous with tanks and mass infantry battles, although a confrontation of this nature has not occurred (except briefly during Operation Desert Storm) since World War II.
The enduring image of World War I is of men stuck in muddy trenches, and of vast armies deadlocked in a fight neither could win. It was a war of barbed wire, poison gas, and horrific losses as officers led their troops on mass charges across No Man's Land and into a hail of bullets. While these impressions are all too true, they hide the fact that trench warfare was dynamic and constantly evolving throughout the war as all armies struggled to find a way to break through the opposing lines.

More than you may want to know about Lieutenant Commander Geffrey Spencer Simpson of the Royal British Navy
Itâs taken me a while to get around to submitting a review of The Naval Africa Expedition of World War I: The History and Legacy of the Battle for Lake Tanganyika in the African Interior. My problem is my dislike of the Lieutenant Commander Geffrey Spencer Simpson of the Royal British Navy. I have a lot of bad things to say about them, but then this review will not get posted. I suggest you read about that officer and his behavior throughout the campaign and after that, when he did not deserve credit or as much credit as he felt. The first third of the book describes the Berlin conference of 1884-1885 that established rules for the colonization of land in Africa. Next, the book describes the events that led to the outbreak of World War I. The last two-thirds of the book describes the trials and tribulations of taking to Royal Navy gunboats by rail, by river and overland to Lake Tanganyika. I would recommend reading the other Charles River Editors about the overall East African campaign ---The East African Campaign of World War I: The History and Legacy of the Allied Victory over Germany in East Africa.
I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth
I want to thank the Charles Rivers Editors for the free access! Often when I read a story about Imperialist ventures in Africa, I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth.

Towards the end of the Korean War, 28 American soldiers were inserted into the conflict on a hill, with a company of ROK troops, that is now inside the Demilitarized Zone on the Korean Peninsula. They were on a secret mission to test 'battlefield radar' for the first time, which eventually gave GIs the ability to spot the enemy and direct fire on the battlefield, providing a significant advantage during the war. Shortly after arriving, thousands of Chinese soldiers overran their position. The Americans fought for survival for two weeks and only 14 made it out alive. They were cut off from American forces. They were told to hold and defend their position at all cost. They were Lost Bastards.
