    Title: Air Battle for Dunkirk
    Subtitle: 26 May - 3 June 1940
    Author: Norman Franks
    Narrator: Roger Davis
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-17
    Publisher: Grub Street Publishing LTD
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
With the epic blockbuster film Dunkirk, to be released in July, 2017, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring, amongst others, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, and Mark Rylance, this reissue has never been more timely. "Where is the RAF?" was the oft-quoted question asked by soldiers waiting on the beach at Dunkirk, to where they had retreated following the German blitzkrieg through northern France, and where they were now being pounded by the Luftwaffe. The air forces were there, as Norman Franks proves, detailing the outstanding achievements of the Allied pilots who fought, using outmoded tactics, against enemy pilots who had earlier had easy victories over the Polish, Dutch, and Belgian air forces. The RAF's achievement reminds us just how close Britain came to disaster in June, 1940.

    Air Battle for Dunkirk
I am not a professional book reviewer. Having said that,I found the book a very interesting read and hard to put down. The author has undertaken a great deal of research, down to recording the serial numbers, where known,of the aircraft flown by certain pilots, during this historic event. Reading the combat reports and description of events way back during the air battle over Dunkirk was a fascinating glimpse into the past. A book highly recommended for the aviation historian.
    most excellent read
simply a great account of what happened over Dunkirk. Great descriptions of battles mixed in with pilot accounts, especially those shot down, who made their way back to Britain with the troops
    RAF over Dunkirk
Highly recommended. As always, Norman Franks provides an hour to hour, blow to blow account of the air events surrounding the evacuation. For such a short period, there is a whole lotta action involving several and famous characters and squadrons of the RAF. Certainly a must have for RAF fans, but this is a book to read slowly.
If something missing is the actual comparason between RAF claims and Luftwaffe losses. Otherwise, an excellent read.
    Bored me to tears!
I thought this was to be the story of the men and women of this battle. Instead, it reads like a choppy log book with no backstory. I was very disappointed.

    Publisher's Summary:
The epic true story of Dunkirk - now a major motion picture, written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance.
In 1940, at the French port of Dunkirk, more than 300,000 trapped Allied troops were dramatically rescued from destruction at the hands of Nazi Germany by an extraordinary seaborne evacuation. The true history of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians involved in the nine-day skirmish has passed into legend. Now the story Winston Churchill described as a 'miracle' is narrated by best-selling author Joshua Levine in its full sweeping context, including new interviews with veterans and survivors.
Told from the viewpoints of land, sea and air, Joshua Levine's Dunkirk is a dramatic account of a defeat that paved the way to ultimate victory and preserved liberty for generations to come.
    Critic Reviews:
"Joshua Levine has a natural gift for narrative description." (Daily Express)
    "Fascinating and thoroughly entertaining." (Observer)
"A first-class portrait of a traumatic and tragic time." (Sunday Telegraph)

    Excellent
This book combines the evidence based history of the Dunkirk evacuation with a commentary on how it was turned into a film. Many detailed individual stories are included in the overall story of improvisation, muddle, perseverance and courage.
Like the film, this book is about the human stories. The style of writing and tone of reading are light. This makes it an interesting and absorbing read.
    History meets Hollywood.
What did you like most about Dunkirk?
I listened to this in anticipation of the movie release. The book featured an interview with the director Christopher Nolan which I enjoyed. I liked the wide scope that the author took. How and why Dinkirk happened, personal accounts and the nation impact of the event. I really like the book for its historical content but it also had an extra chapter at the end about the making of the film, about their challenges and how it gave them a greater understanding of the people involved.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dunkirk?
Countless personal stories. I liked the guy who escaped zee Germans.
What about Jonathan Keeble and Leighton Pugh s performance did you like?
I enjoyed Jonathan Keeble's performance so much I checked my audible library to see if I had unread books narrated by him.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I felt for the boys who walked out into the sea because they wanted to go home.
    Any additional comments?
I was hoping to enjoy this book as a prelude to the film. I did, however I also enjoyed it as peice of non-fiction history. The author presented the subject very well and it's was wonderfully narrated. I feel educated on the subject and wish I could go visit Dunkirk itself. I also feel very greatful to a wide variety of people who sacrificed a great deal. As a reader of WW2 history it was nice to see so many little British successes.
    Informative and captivating
Joshua Levine's detailed account of Operation Dynamo (the Dunkirk evacuation) is a great accompaniment to Christopher Nolan's outstanding film.

    Publisher's Summary:
Lieutenant Edward Settle Godfrey was commander of K Company of the 7th Cavalry in the battalion of Captain Frederick Benteen. Godfrey was a central figure in the Reno-Benteen defense over the 25th and 26th of June, 1876. He kept a diary of the Yellowstone Expedition against the Sioux from May 17 to September 24. The diary reveals anecdotes and observations of General Custer's mood and behavior before the fight on June 25th, as well as the desperate story of survival experienced by the battalions under Reno and Benteen. It also contains fascinating details about how the cavalry moved, camped, and relaxed during the days leading up to the fight. In 1892, (then Captain) Godfrey wrote what became a very famous and widely-read article for Century Magazine about the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Both of these documents are cited by most serious Custer books..

The importance of Edward Settle Godfreyâs participation in the Little Bighorn battle and its aftermath cannot be overestimated. This transcript of his diary from the fateful summer of 1876 is fascinating and Iâve read it through a couple of times. Many of the soldiers of that era carried pocket diaries and itâs amazing that this important document not only survived (itâs in the Library of Congress) but is so affordable.
In addition, Godfreyâs famous 1892 Century magazine article is included here. It was one of the earliest writings by someone who was in the battle and helped shape public perceptions of the event for years. Godfrey later retired a general. He was friends with Frederick Benteen until the latterâs death. For anyone with an interest in the frontier army and the Indian wars, this is a real find.

I enjoyed reading this and having read many books on the LBH, it was interesting to read the daily notes that Godfrey penned. Reading the actual writings and accounts of the participants is always enlightening and provides a better perspective on the activities surrounding this event. While this book is a quick read, it is worth the reading time invested.

A fascinating, candid, and objective first-hand account of the Seventh Cavalry's involvement with the entire 1876 summer campaign against the Sioux, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, from the time they left Fort Abraham Lincoln in May 1876 until they returned in September.
    Godfrey Dairies
Lt Godfrey gives a daily account on the hardships and dangers the 7th Cavalry faced on the journey from Ft Abraham Lincoln to the Custer battlefield along with subsequent events chasing the Indians on the Plains. This is a first hand account of the battle by someone actually involved in the fighting. Well done!

    Title: Insurgency and Counterinsurgency
    Subtitle: A Global History
    Author: Jeremy Black
    Narrator: Doug Greene
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: History, Military
    Publisher's Summary:
This timely book offers a world history of insurgencies and of counterinsurgency warfare. Jeremy Black moves beyond the conventional Western-centric narrative, reaching back to antiquity to trace the pre-modern origins of war within states. His sweeping study will be essential material for all students of military history.
The book is published by Rowman & Littlefield.
    Critic Reviews:
"A masterful survey from the Roman Empire to present-day Syria." (Kaushik Roy, Peace Research Institute Oslo, Norway)
"Jeremy Black does it again in this comprehensively researched, clearly presented analysis of insurgency and counterinsurgency in a global historical context. A major resource for courses and individual readers alike." (Dennis Showalter, Colorado College)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing survey with few insights
If you seek a comprehensive laundry list of insurgencies from the pre-modern through the modern, this is your book. But if you are looking for deep insight and analysis into counterinsurgency strategy and tactics, don't expect much here. The main theme of the book is sound: that insurgencies succeed and fail for a variety of factors (political will, ideology, terrain, armaments, tactics, foreign support, etc.) and that over-reliance on rigid counterinsurgency doctrine or broad generalizations based on a skewed historical sample of insurgencies can lead one astray. The author points out that many celebrated authors on counterinsurgency strategy base their conclusions on a self-serving and overly limited selection of events. Historical examples can be found to undermine every known rule about counterinsurgency practice. Another shortcoming of this book, in my view, is that it jumps relentlessly from one insurgency to another, leaping across centuries and continents, with dizzying effect. While the author makes a brave attempt at organization, the narrative seems scattered and disjointed for want of connective thought and analysis. The phrase that comes up most often in the author's limited attempts at analysis is "remains unclear." I also found the writing wordy, vague and repetitive, lacking the color or wit that would enliven these dry summaries of long-ago revolts and rebellions in little-known places.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Killing School brings listeners inside the US Naval Special Warfare (SEAL) Scout/Sniper Course - the gruelling three-month training program that produces the world's deadliest snipers.
As a SEAL sniper and combat veteran, Brandon Webb was tasked with revamping the US Naval Special Warfare (SEAL) Scout/Sniper School, incorporating the latest advances in technology to create an entirely new course that continues to test even the best warriors. In this revealing new book, Webb takes listeners through every aspect of the elite training. Trainees learn to utilize every edge possible to make their shot count - studying crosswinds, barometric pressure, latitude, and even the rotation of the Earth to become ballistic experts. In addition to marksmanship, each SEAL's endurance, stealth, and mental and physical stamina are pushed to the breaking point.
Webb also shows how this training plays out in combat, using real-life exploits of the world's top snipers, including Jason Delgado, who made some of the most remarkable kill shots in the Iraq War; Nicholas Irving, the US Army Ranger credited with 33 kills in a single tour in Afghanistan; and Rob Furlong, who during Operation Anaconda delivered the then-longest kill shot in history. During Webb's sniper school tenure, the course graduated some of the deadliest snipers of this generation, including Marcus Luttrell (Lone Survivor), Adam Brown (Fearless), and Chris Kyle (American Sniper). The Killing School demonstrates how today's sniper is trained to function as an entire military operation rolled into a single individual - an army of one.

On 5th June 1984, the Indian army began its attack on the complex at Amritsar, which houses the two most sacred shrines. Generals who had pledged to use minimum force and on no account to violate the shrines were not prepared for the fierce and adept resistance they encountered. Having suffered severe casualties, the infantry were driven back, and as a last resort - with approval from Delhi - tanks were ordered in. The Akal Takht was virtually reduced to rubble. It is doubtful if Mrs Gandhi would have initiated Operation Blue Star had she known how bloody and devastating the consequences of that 24-hour conflict would be.

This was a difficult period for India. The book shows how the political leadership behaved, particularly Mrs.Indira Gandhi. It achieves the difficult mean between maintaining an emotional link with the subject and also maintaining a journalistic objectivity.
Recommended reading for all those who wish well for India and want to understand that period

He discusses developments in strategies and tactics, logistics, and weaponry and provides detailed discussions of important battles and campaigns. His book is an excellent introduction for both students and the general listener.
    Members Reviews:
    Received as noted.
Received the item within the time frame noted and in the condition noted as well. Would definitely do business again. Thanks!
    Patterns of conflict...
Larry Addington's "The Patterns of War Since the Eighteenth Century" has been a staple of U.S. Army professional military education since its first edition was published in 1984. This subsequent edition brings the narrative to the conclusion of DESERT STORM. Current events are not however the strength of the book. Instead, it offers a concise and highly readable survey of European methods of warfare beginning with the American Revolution.
From the American Revolution, the narrative proceeds through the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, the Wars of German Unification, the First and Second World Wars, and the hot wars of the Cold War. The text is supplemented with a selection of maps and photographs. Various battles and leaders get their due mention, but the focus is on how the changing roles of technology, tactics, logistics, and strategy impact the practice of warfare. This European-centric point of view won't be for everyone, but the perspective is invaluable for the military professional and the students of warfare and international relations. Strongly recommended.
Lot of history no real paterns
For summing up two centuries of history this book does a good job. But the title is misleading. Nowhere in the book there is a real view on warfare paterns during these two centuries. It keeps on summing up historical events until the end. Reading between the lines someone can seen some paterns and some occasional remarks from the author serve as a reminder of the goal set out in the beginning of the book and the title. Until WOII there is some discussion on weapons and tactics used but after that we take giant steps towards the first gulf war. Maybe the ambition was to large. In two centuries of warfare we came from de rifled musket to precision guided munitions. A limitation on landwarfare or naval warfare would have been beter, together with a more structured aproach to weapons and tactics.
Mandatory Text for U.S. Army Majors
As the title indicates, the Army's Command & General Staff College requires students to read Patterns of War in the core history class. Professors can make best use of this book as a supplement to a more thorough analysis into military history. Addington surveys the history of warfare from the evolution of national warfare in France and the U.S. in the late 1700's to operations in Desert Storm.
This book will not provide a lot of depth or analysis, simply the basic facts and a good list of sources from which to perform further research. If a student or enthusiast of history, use Patterns of War to gain a cursory understanding of many of the conflicts in the last two centuries. Or, use it as a basis to launch into further study and learning.

    Publisher's Summary:
A daredevil pilot in the famed 352nd Fighter Squadron, the author of this remarkable memoir bailed out of his burning Mustang two days after D-Day and was launched on a thrilling adventure on the ground in Occupied France.
After months living and fighting with the French Resistance, Fahrenwald was captured by the Wehrmacht, interrogated as a spy, and interned in a POW camp-and made a daring escape just before his deportation to Germany. Nothing diminished this pilot's talent for spotting the ironic humor in even the most aggravating or dangerous situations - nor his penchant for extracting his own improvised and sometimes hilarious version of justice.
A suspenseful World War II account and an outrageously witty tale of daring and friendship, this book brings to vivid life the daily bravery, mischief, and intrigues of fighter pilots, Resistance fighters, and other Allies in the air and on the ground.

    Breathtaking adventures!
What made the experience of listening to Bailout Over Normandy the most enjoyable?
    1) The events that happened. Nobody from today's World can possibly make up a story as thrilling as this one, let alone imagine that it actually happened to real people.
    2) The language. I could listen to anything being talked about in such manner for hours.
    3) The narrator - he has a fantastic voice, and great acting skills.
What other book might you compare Bailout Over Normandy to and why?
"Thumult in the clouds" by James Goodson
What about Corey M. Snows performance did you like?
His accent and voice acting skills. Too bad it's obvious he doesn't speak a word of French, and does an atrocious job of trying to pronounce the numerous French words in the story. 5 stars, nonetheless.
    Very enjoyable
Overall very enjoyable. The narrator overdid the "southern/hillbilly" accent a bit I thought but on a book like this hard to know if it was in fact the author's real manner of speech. The story held my attention. Definitely a member of the greatest generation. Interesting to hear a first hand account of what went on and of the bravery of ordinary French peoples who find themselves in a very extraordinary situation.
