How do we meet with God? Do we approach him in the way my kids approach me sometimes: “Yo Pops, what’s up?” That’s probably not a good idea. Approaching God, I believe, requires some advance preparation. Yes, we can approach his throne of grace at any time because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, but reverence is essential. Listen and learn a model for meeting with God that comes from the story of a man named Nehemiah. In the story, we learn the importance of paying attention to God’s Word, worshipping the Lord, understanding what God says, repenting of sins, and then experiencing joy.

At this point we are half way through the book of Nehemiah. This message from the book of Nehemiah brings up four questions for us to ask ourselves?

Do I fear the Lord? (Fear meaning “deep respect”)

Am I protecting myself from the enemy?

Do I recognize God’s voice?

How do I feel about giving?

Growing as a believer in the Lord requires us to consider these things. Listen as these four questions are woven into today’s message from Nehemiah chapter 7.

Nehemiah dealt with distractions, dangerous lies, and deception. Distractions are around every corner. If you’re anything like me, staying on task is hard. In fact, getting this podcast going has been a challenge because it takes focus and because I deal with constantly! How about lies and deception? They are everywhere, aren’t they? Nehemiah was super wise and had solid insight on how to deal with these things in order to help the people stay on task.

I hope you are learning from my teaching about Nehemiah. If you didn’t hear the previous three podcasts, go back and listen to them. I promise you’ll learn something, just like I did when I read the book of Nehemiah.

People would be great if it wasn’t for people! Wherever there are people, there will be problems. But what do you do? What is your problem-solving model? Is it effective? Learn how Nehemiah solved problems by carefully considering the issue, looking for the cause that was closest to home, and likely pulling from his knowledge of scripture. All the while, he set a good example for everyone. Listen and then consider an update to your own problem-solving model.

Nehemiah and his massive team were moving right along with the rebuilding of the wall when they encountered the enemy. However, the enemy was not an army, no, not at all. The enemy consisted of several individuals who wanted the construction to stop immediately. The first line of attack was ridicule. Later the enemies of fatigue and fear set in. Wisely, Nehemiah met these enemies with confidence and the work continued. We, too, need to be on guard for the enemies of various disguises.

Nehemiah had no leadership manual, nor had his team worked together before they all rallied for one of the most incredible construction projects of all time. Like many books in the Bible, the book of Nehemiah is often overlooked. In fact, before this message series began I don’t recall having had any interaction with Nehemiah, ever! What a shame! The book is rich with vision, challenges, suspense, wisdom, good guys and bad guys. Listen and learn what can happen when God speaks AND when God’s people obey. While I was delivering the messages in this podcast, I was also teaching through the book to a small group of friends at their place of work. They, too, were learning of Nehemiah for the first time. Welcome! For the introduction of this new podcast, I decided to start with the topic: “Finding Your Way Back to Jesus”. After seeing numerous people fall away from the faith, many times I have wondered why. Right before this series was created, a particular friend of mine became disillusioned after something terrible happened that was well beyond his control. I have never experienced what he experienced so I cannot say I would not have the same provoking questions he has. He is the main inspiration that launched these three messages. I have a heavy heart as I think about him, and I hope he will find his way back to Jesus.

Some of my theologically-minded friends will wince at the very title of this series and will want to debate the doctrinal soundness of both the title and the content. This series is not for them. In fact, probably none of these podcasts will be for them. But I trust the messages will land in the right place, with those who believe, or have believed, but struggle.
