For as long as she can remember, La Juana has been on a mission to make a difference in her community through tacit growth. To her, sustainable change begins with self awareness and courage. Through her business, she works to systemically harness people power for success in life and profession through entrepid and culturally responsive leadership and management, actionable and data-oriented planning and goal setting, and an intentional commitment to leveraging information technology to bridge gaps and communities for a better tomorrow.

In her book, “Earned Value Formula Pocket Book and Guide”, La Juana endeavors to inspire others to make decisions that are based on evidence based best practices, lessons learned and strategic thinking. With each formula, she provides a relatable scenario and example to follow or improve upon on a case-by-case basis. La Juana is a firm believer that growth begins with understanding one’s agency. Teresa Van Hoy joined the History Department at St. Mary’s University in 2007 and published her first book, Peons, Prisoners, and Priests: A Social History of Mexico’s Railroads. For the period 2011-2014, she held the O’Connor Chair for the History of Hispanic Texas and the Southwest during which she conducted the research for a new book project and piloted the first Public History initiatives at St. Mary’s University.

Bruce A. Brockway, MD, FACP Bruce Brockway, a native of Minnesota, received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1970. He graduated in 1974 from the University of Minnesota Medical School and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. Dr. Brockway completed internal medicine training as well as a nephrology sub-specialty fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was awarded a research grant from the National Kidney Foundation. In 2007, Dr. Brockway was awarded “The Gift of Life Award” (A Kathryn Dial Murray Award) from the National Kidney Foundation of South and Central Texas March 2007. Dr. Brockway was recruited to a faculty position at the University of Chicago Medical School but chose to remain in San Antonio to raise his family and serve his patients’ needs. Dr. Brockway went on to join the clinical faculty at UTHSC-SA as a Clinical Professor of Medicine where he taught medical students, post graduate students, and nurse practitioner students. Dr. Brockway certified in Geriatrics, Critical Care, Clinical Hypertension by the American Society of Hypertension, and in Nutritional Support. His focus has always been on the patient. He previously served as the Chief Nephrologist at Santa Rosa Medical Center Hospital while working as a Nephrologist in their dialysis unit. He held an Ethics Committee position and was involved with nutritional support in the ICU at that time. Dr. Brockway served in Quality Assurance/Utilization Review for Santa Rosa Hospital and Baptist Hospital. Dr. Brockway has served on the Board of directors with the National Kidney Foundation and is a present Board of Directors Member for the Texas Kidney Foundation. In January 2020, he was appointed to serve on the Texas Chronic Kidney Disease Taskforce by Governor Abbott.

William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, a specialist in kidney diseases, has served as the president of UT Health San Antonio since 2009. UT Health San Antonio is one of six health institutions under the umbrella of The University of Texas System. UT Health is a dynamic and rapidly expanding health science center with five professional schools (medicine, nursing, dentistry, health professions and graduate school of biomedical sciences) with missions of education, clinical care, research and community service. With a budget of nearly one billion dollars, a work force of 7,100 and a research portfolio of approximately $300 million, UT Health is quickly rising in prominence among academic medical centers in the United States. Henrich received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and later completed a residency in Internal Medicine at The University of Oregon Medical School and a fellowship in Nephrology at The University of Colorado School of Medicine. During his career, Henrich has served as Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine, as Professor and Chair of Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio, and as the Theodore Woodward Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at The University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He became the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs at UT Health San Antonio in 2006 prior to being selected as its President in 2009. He is the inaugural holder of the John P. Howe, III, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Health Policy. He is the author of over 300 original articles and chapters, and the founding editor of the popular dialysis textbook, “Henrich’s Principles and Practice of Dialysis”. His current areas of interest are in improving dialysis and vascular renal disease. An elected member of several prominent research societies, Henrich also served as President of the American Society of Nephrology. He is passionate about mentoring students, residents and young physicians and has received teaching accolades in every institution in which he has served.

Dr. Francisco Cigarroa is the Director of University Transplant Center. Dr. Cigarroa is a visionary academic leader and nationally renowned transplant surgeon. He received his bachelor’s degree at Yale University in Connecticut, his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and completed fellowships in pediatric surgery and transplant surgery at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 1995, Dr. Cigarroa joined the faculty at UT Health San Antonio. In 1997, he was part of the surgical team that performed a split-liver donor transplant between two recipients, the first operation of its kind in Texas. In 2003, President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the President’s Committee on the national Medal of Science. In 2009, he became the first Hispanic to be named Chancellor of The University of Texas System. On February 10, 2014, Cigarroa announced his resignation as Chancellor from the UT System to return full-time to his passion in patient care. He has made and continues to make impressive and lasting contributions in the medical community. Dr. Cigarroa specializes in adult and pediatric liver and kidney transplant surgery. Along with the surgical team at University Transplant Center, he has performed complicated liver tumor resections, vascular reconstruction for pancreatic tumors previously categorized as inoperable, repaired bile duct injuries, and performed life saving surgery on pancreatic cancer patients.

Jennifer Milton is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Chief Administrative Officer at the University Transplant Center, where she is charged to integrate the business, operational, quality, and strategic efforts for University of Texas Health San Antonio and the University Health System. 

UTC is an adult and pediatric lung, liver, kidney transplant as well as the home of the UTC Advanced Endoscopy Center, Texas Liver Tumor Center, Pancreas Tumor Center, Interventional Pulmonary and several other end stage organ programs. UTC has doubled in size and scope over the last five years through innovative programs and zealous outreach.  UTC is the second largest living liver program in the US, the first program in the US and second worldwide to perform Paired Living Liver Donation Exchanges and six months ago, UTC open the Center for Life – the countries most comprehensive dedicated organ and tissue recovery center built with a multi-bed ICU, a cadre of operating and pulsatile perfusion suites with comprehensive educational and research funding, facilities and staff.

Jones-Smith is a writer and advocate. She draws from her professional and personal experiences when writing. She has been published in national, state and local publications. Her recent work is a research paper authored with 18 colleagues as a member of the APOL1 in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Delphi Consensus, a group of investigators dedicated to the study of APOL1, the first CKD genetic link to descendants of West Sub-Saharan Africa.  Delphi consensus and systematic review on diagnosis, education and care of patients with APOL1-associated nephropathy will be published in 2020.

Jones-Smith was recently appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Texas Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force. She also belongs to the We Work for Health Texas Coalition, Honor the Gift Campaign, SAAACAM, San Antonio Business Journal Leadership Trust, American Association of Kidney Patients, and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
