Continuing our series on the History of U.S. Imperialism from where we left off at the end of WW2, we will be delving into the early years of the international struggle between Western Imperialism and the world Communist movement following the end of the Second World War up to 1960. This will include happenings domestically, such as severe repression of the Communist movement, the Civil Rights movement and its connection to the Communist movement, and the movement against conscription. This class will also cover international events, such as the U.S. military interventions in Greece, Korea, Iran, Guatemala, Cuba and more, as well as the nuclear flashpoints, what was happening in Germany, US-Soviet Relations etc.

The PSMLS presents a class on the documentary Babi Yar: Lessons of History. This video tells the story of the Babi Yar Massacre, a horrendous event carried out by Fascists in occupied Ukraine at the Babi Yar ravine near Kiev. "Babi Yar: Lessons of History" dates to the 1970s, and it was released in the West in the 1980s. It was originally produced by Soviet filmmakers through the Ukrainian Studio of TV Films. The film depicts the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Ukraine and the massacre of Jewish people during the Holocaust at Babi Yar, where they were buried in a mass grave outside of Kiev. The film is a historical account of events and warns nations about the dangers of Neo-Nazi ideologies around the world, especially in the United States. The events are told from the perspective of Ukrainian-Jewish poet Vitaly Korotich through voice over that is intertwined with survivor testimonies and archival footage.

The PSMLS presents a much-needed class on the Hungarian Counter-Revolution of 1956. We’ll be delving into some of the background information of Hungary before and during WW2 with the fascist Horthyite regime, as well as the conditions which led to the 1956 Counter-Revolution after WW2. The class will examine the 1956 counter-revolution itself and the response to it by the USSR, something that is misrepresented by western sources. Lastly, we will draw parallels between this event and more recent events, such as the Euromaidan coup in Ukraine in 2013/2014.

October 3rd, 2023 was the 30th Anniversary of Black October of 1993. Black October was the name for the events which took place in Russia in 1993 when the new, capitalist Yeltsin administration attacked the House of Soviets, arrested lawmakers, ended the regional and local Soviets and all their institutions and adopted a new constitution for the country, beginning a period of Yeltsinite “shock therapy” capitalism in Russia that severely impacted the Russian people.
