It seems like every call I get from a prospect sound something like this “I need you to come and spray for…” this is usually followed by have you been to my website and let me explain what we do.

The problem with IPM is that it has Principals That work but they mean different thins to different people.

To the Farmer it means one thing, Crop Rotation, Inspections, Monitoring

To the nursary It means another, sanitation practices sterilizing trays,

To Lawn and Ornamemntal another cultural practices mower height frequency, watering

In General Household pest yet another simple thie cleaning. Air BandB

And I have no clue what it would be in Termite World. I guess monitoring stations.

The problem with Implementing IPM strategies is that IPM requires three things.

Training

Inspect

Identify

Develop A Control Protocol

Monitoring

Cooperation

Your Client is A Collaborator

Proper Sanitation

Cooperation to most people pest control is one sided, I hired you to control my pests. If it requires me to do something different than what I’m doing ill hire somebody more competent.

Unless the customer can understand that pest control is really their responsibility and their problem.

The restaurant employee that dosent close the dumpster and leaves the door open.

The business owner that dosent understand the chain of custody and brings in products.

The hotel cleaning crew that cant identify a bedbug and doesn’t see her job as pest control.

The building manager that wont seal holes because that’s why we have rodent stations. And we don’t have the personnel.

The landscaper that installs the wrong plant in the wrong place. Cant you add fertilizer to make it look better.

Most customers and even some technicians have no clue on what it really takes to control a pest much less prevent it.

Bait, Pills, Powders, Sprays, Stations ive used everything and nothing works. What are you going to do?

I have to figure out how bad have they screwd this up to figure out how to fix it.

Powders, baits, Sprays and stations. Just the right ones in the right places.

Exclusion is too expensive, chemical is cheaper than labor.

Inspections and Monitoring are a waste of time if you are going to spray anyway.

Insect Biology is for Entomologists habits and lifecycles are useless.

Chemical Rotation is IPM

Reducing Chemical Exposure is another way of saying we will apply less chemical to screw the customer....

There are some that believe that company owners are greedy and should share in the profits.

Think real hard before you answer.

Everyone gets paid from the top sales and service.

Owners get paid off the bottom line after everyone else is paid.

As an employee what do you do every day that specifically contributes to the bottom line so that you can take a piece of it?

Most of the answers went along this line

Employees don’t deserve to get profits. This is the result of an entitlement mentality.

Employees get paid salaries owners get profits.

They can sell more To make more money.

They prefer commission over salary.

Pay your people well so you can retain them.

Company made 5 million in profit and all I got was a $35 check.

Owners are investors, sowers and tenders, took a risk when they started with 90% chance of failing and overcame obstacles that you are not willing to hurdle.

For the most part employees are reapers, they invested nothing in the most difficult part of a business which is the startup.

But only two owners answered the question correctly except I didn’t ask owners I asked employees surprisingly no employee could answer the question.

The question was “As an employee what do you do everyday that specifically contributes to the bottom line so that you can take a piece of it?”

This is the hard reality that employees don’t have the faintest clue of what or how they contribute to the profitability of a business and most don’t care.

By this some believe they should get Christmas and year end bonuses, bonuses are discretionary and not earned. No one is entitled to a bunus unless the bunus is tied to a production incentive.

If a business or owner decides to share profits it’s at its own discretion.

But they expect raises, bonuses including Christmas bonuses. Yet they have no idea on what it takes to have enough gross profit to pay everyone nor net profit before taxes to pay investors mainly the owner.

I have a different view on this primarily because I’ve been an employee, manager and owner. I’ve been previ to the financials of most business.

Employees don’t participate in the business of the business they are only concerned or trained in the that tasks within the business. In other words they have no clue of what it takes to run a business, when someone quits their job to start a business most will fail within the first year and go back to working for somebody else again or say I had no clue it was going to be this hard.

The problem is I come from big corporate where financials are disclosed, in a mom and pop shops the employees see what comes in but don’t know what goes out and most own...

New Species of Fly from Great Smoky Mountains National Park

A new article by Michael Ferro and John Plakidas describes a new species of fly that was collected in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Neostenoptera appalachiensis is a gall midge, and it is the first record of the genus Neostenoptera in the New World.

The specific name, appalachiensis, means “from the Appalachians” in Latin, in reference to the collection site of the type series from Tennessee, which is located along the western flank of the Appalachian Mountains.

“I collected this 10 years ago and couldn’t figure out what it was,” Ferro said. “I put it on Bugguide.net and finally John D. Plakidas recognized it as something he might be able to recognize.

Why we got in TO PEST CONTROL

Pest control is not considered a career. It’s a job people stumble upon.

Pest control as a vocation that can only be learned through an apprenticeship. Unlike an electrician, plumber or hvac, mechanic there are no schools churning out pest control techs.

Most people in pest control have little more than a high school degree, if you are not going to get an MD or Ph.D. Then you want a career that will allow you to grow personally.

Most of us got into pest control because we needed a job.

The top three things most pest control techs want.

They want quality training. Top level to make them the best.

They want support. Management exists to serve them not the other way around.

They want to be listened too. They are on the front lines they hear things.

They want to work for an organization with a vision to do something great in the world that gives them passion, prestige, purpose.

Support staff are they self serving thinking nothing happens until they ok it, support staff are there to support the front lines, in order to serve the customer best, most support people behave as if systems, protocols and procedures are in place to satisfy their desire for control instead of empowering others to be successful billing gets their panties in a twist because a customer calls because they don’t understand the bill, accounts payable feels that vendors should design billing around them.

Hostile and toxic environments

Owners tolerate toxic people because they feel they can’t replace them, allow employees to get away with murder because of fear and destroy moral.

Reward the behavior you want

If you want reduced call backs then train on the best procedures, provide customer support, monitor and qualify then reward the everyone that achieves, work with those that need improvement and fire slackers who make everybody else look bad and drag down the moral.

Are you investing in top level training compensating people on achieving new skills

Everyone claims to have professional technicians but can they back it up and prove it again their contemporaries.

Every time they pass a class you reimburse them for the tuition and give them a raise, send an email to all your customers informing them on their techs success. Build up your people’s in the eyes of the client.
