In this episode of the Physician Grind Podcast, Dr. Zahir shares with us a story of when an emergency suddenly ended his vacation. He had just returned from a "soul searching" trip to India and South East Asia, when he decided to go bowling with old friends. On his drive home the traffic on the freeway suddenly stopped. What he found was a motorcyclist on the ground that had been involved in a terrible accident. Dr. Zahir struggles with dealing with an emergency outside of the comfort of an Emergency Department. He feels useless as he tries to figure out what to do to help begin the resuscitation of the patient. Luckily paramedics arrive before the patient loses his pulse and are able to scoop and run. In this episode new contributor, Marie MacMillan, shares with us a conversation she had with a patient that came to the brink of death. In the beginning of the episode Marie shares with us her experience working in the CCU. She receives hand off of a patient that had a scheduled cardiac surgery. The patient goes into ventricular fibrillation just as the  patient is passed onto her. The patient is defibrillated and survives. The patient has a tumultuous stay in the ICU during which she has multiple cardiac arrests. By some miracle, the patient survives her time in the ICU and is able to be downgraded to the medical wards. Marie goes to visit the patient who shares with her a story of meeting her deceased mother-in-law in the afterlife.

In this episode of the Physician Grind Podcast we feature a brand new contributor, Sam Keif. A native of Boston, Sam shares with us his experience in health care at the time of the Boston Bombings.

Sam Keif Bio:
Sam has spent over a decade working in the healthcare industry. He started as a front desk attendant at his college's student health center and worked his way up to a management role at a world renowned academic hospital in Boston. In the span of his career he worked at institutions such as Boston's Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He's worked in roles directly within the operations, analytics, finance, billing, hiring and clinic management within the healthcare sector. After working for other for many years Sam got the itch to go out on his own and started freelance recruiting in the summer of 2016. In January 2017 Sam officially started "The Gaisce Group, LLC". "My goal is to help both hiring facilities and candidates reach their goals and find the right fit for them to be able to practice medicine to the best of their ability." "When you agree to work with me you get all of me. I pour my heart and soul into my work and I don't settle for mediocrity...ever."

Why healthcare? "I've always wanted to work in a job where I can put my head on my pillow at the end of the day knowing I've helped someone."

Sam lives in Braintree Massachusetts with his Wife Sabina, Son Barry, and their two dogs Gobi and Aloo.

The episode begins with Sam waking up to multiple missed messages on his phone. He is instructed that he is essential personnel and needs to report to the hospital. Road closures turn his usual 5 min commute into an hour. He arrived at work where he was responsible for coordinating care for cancer patients. The city suddenly closes and Sam is faced with a whole slew of new challenges. He continues to share the additional challenges he faced that day. 

In this episode of the Physician Grind Podcast Dr. Zahir shares with us a story of his first shift in a newly constructed ER. The new ER does not quite feel like home. Luckily all it takes is one patient to remedy this problem.

In this episode Dr. Zahir shares the story of inserting his first chest tube. After a long overnight call, the cobwebs are suddenly cleared when he summons the power of Hulkamania to complete the procedure. Under the watchful eyes of surgeons, Dr. Zahir hears his fans cheering him on and successfully inserts the chest tube.

In this episode Dr. Manny shares with us a story from his residency. In the mad dash at the end of his shift he picked up a seemingly innocuous patient that he thought he would be able to quickly see, work up, and discharge before the end of his shift. Like all things that are too good to be true, this patient threw Dr. Manny a curveball that ultimately led to him getting crop dusted.

Thanksgiving Special: In this episode of the Physician Grind Podcast Bryan returns to share with us a story of a patient that he treated while working on Thanksgiving. initially, the patient is calm and cooperative. But like most things in the ER that suddenly changes. The end result was that he was "Too Slow!!!!"

n this episode of the of the Physician Grind Podcast, Dr. Michael returns to share with us another one of his incredible stories from the Emergency Department. Dr. Michael is in the middle of his shift when a pregnant patient in labor is brought in. After examining the patient, Dr. Michael determines that the delivery is imminent and that there is no time to take the patient to labor and delivery. An OB/GYN intern rotating in the Emergency Department performs the delivery with no problem.

However, as she is about to perform an episiotomy tear repair, she is greeted by a "surprise delivery".
