On the night of December 30th, 2000, in Setagaya, Tokyo, a family of four was murdered inside their home.
What followed is one of the most baffling and unsettling investigations in modern criminal history.
Because the killer didn’t flee.
He stayed.
For hours, he moved through the Miyazawa home—eating food from the kitchen, using the bathroom, accessing the family computer, and even tending to his own injuries.
He left behind fingerprints. DNA. Clothing. A bag containing sand traced to the Mojave Desert in the United States.
Investigators later determined his genetic profile may have included ancestry linked to regions near the Adriatic Sea.
The weapon used in the attack broke during the struggle, forcing him to retrieve another knife from inside the home.
By the time he finally left…
He had left behind everything— except his identity.
More than two decades later, the case remains unsolved.
Each year, investigators publicly apologize for the lack of answers. Each year, a reward of 2 million yen is offered for information.
And still…
No one has been identified.
In this episode of The Pine Grove Briar, we examine the Setagaya Family Murders—sometimes referred to as the “Goldilocks Murders”—a case defined not only by violence, but by what came after.
