The Placebo Effect In Marketing

Listen Later

This episode breaks down the "Placebo Effect" and how it's used in marketing. Shannon discovered an interesting study regarding this particular topic that we thought we could expand on, or even deliver or insight in today's marketing realm.

Placebo usually is a term generally used to describe the usage of "fake" pills to study the effects against patients using the "actual" pills.  Both parties think they are getting the medication, allowing scientist to uncover the mental aspects of taking something verses the actual effects the drugs have.

The study referenced is Wright, Scott A. & da Costa Hernandez, José Mauro & Sundar, Aparna & Dinsmore, John & Kardes, Frank R., 2013. "If it tastes bad it must be good: Consumer naïve theories and the marketing placebo effect," International Journal of Research in Marketing, Elsevier, vol. 30(2), pages 197-198.
