In unserer heutigen Episode haben wir wieder den Gründer von the Planet Drum, Mirko, vors Mikro geholt und er hat seinen langjährigen Freund Kari mitgebracht. Gemeinsam gehen sie nochmals ihren Werdegang durch, wie sie zusammen in L.A. studierten, über das Leben als Drummer in London und die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zu dem Musikerleben von damals und heute.

Kari Paavola

Kari Paavola is a freelance drummer. He started his career in the club scene in Helsinki, Finland, when he was sixteen. At seventeen Kari joined Supperheads, a Finnish pop band, and started touring with the band in Finland and Sweden. Kari appeared on their first two albums, the first on Tangerine Records and the second for Warner Brothers. After that Kari relocated to L.A. before moving to London.

Kari joined Cinerama, an international touring act, after two years in London and toured across US four times with the band. He has also done shorter tours of Europe and UK with the group. In addition, he did the Womack and Womack UK tours in 2006 and 2008. In 2009 he toured with Womack and Womack again, this time as a drummer and Musical Director.

During his time in London, Kari has become very busy in the studio scene, recording albums and demos. He appears on 17 internationally available albums. One of them gained Kari a Top-40 hit in the UK when The Wedding Present song I am from further north than you entered the charts in the Top 40. Kari is also on the new Justin Bergh album that charted high in his native South Africa.

Kari suffers no “red light fever” and is a relaxed and creative presence in a session, making sure that the right drum track is created to serve the song.

Kari has appeared on 17 albums, one DVD, and countless demos & jingles, most notably on a General Motors advert. He has extensive touring and recording experience, having done four US tours and many small tours of UK and Europe.

Kari is a quick study and can learn a set of music in a day, making him an ideal choice for last minute gigs & showcases. Kari reads music and has a breadth of experience from the theatre-world as well. He has played in five musicals.

In der heutigen englischen Episode reden Matt, Maurizio und Timur über das Artisten Dasein in Italien, Australien und Deutschland, den Wandel der kulturellen Szene in Berlin und über das musizieren mit Künstlern der Einstürzenden Neubauten, Nick Cave und  Doudou N’Diaye Rose.

Maurizio Vitale

Maurizio ist ein italienischer Schlagzeuger. Er begann schon in jungen Jahren Schlagzeug zu spielen und lernte bei einigen Privatlehrern, bevor er den Jazzkurs am Musikkonservatorium von S. Pietro a Majella in Neapel (IT) besuchte.

Maurizio hat in der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart mit Mitgliedern bekannter Bands wie den Einstürzenden Neubauten, Swans, Iggy Pop, Thåström, PJ Harvey und Faust zusammengearbeitet.

Außerdem spielte er mit dem legendären Sabar Percussionisten Doudou N’Diaye Rose (SN) und der deutschen Sängerin Andrea Schroeder sowohl im Studio als auch live.

Er ist als Studio-Session-Drummer, Live-Drummer und Musikproduzent tätig und arbeitet weltweit mit vielen Bands und Künstlern zusammen.

Matthew Woolhouse

„Matthew grew up in Adelaide, Australia. He started off playing bass guitar before taking up drumming at age 13. It wasn’t long before he was playing drums with a friend in a punk rock band, and he continued to appear on the local scene with them throughout his time in high school.

In 2013 he decided to move to Melbourne, the hometown of drumming legend Virgil Donati. He studied music performance at Melbourne Polytechnic, where he completed the Bachelor of Music course. While there, he took lessons from world-class percussionists, including David Jones, who became a mentor and an inspiration to him. They worked together on a number of recordings, masterclasses and performances, including for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Soon, Matthew was teaching individual and group lessons himself.

Matthew is open to all styles of music. Although he mainly learned from jazz percussionists, his greatest passion is still for punk, rock and thrash. He had the opportunity to gain international experience touring Southeast Asia with the underground thrash band Desecrator.

While he was studying psychology in Adelaide, Matthew got in touch with Mirko. He had a keen interest in joining our team at thePlanetDrum and introducing us to his innovative ideas for incorporating technology into our teaching. Having already spent time living in Berlin to learn German in 2018, he took the opportunity to move there in April 2019 after finishing his studies. He’s been part of our teaching staff at thePlanetDrum ever since.“

In Episode 3 unserer dritten Staffel plaudert Timur mit seinen beiden Kollegen Olli und Fabse über das Tourleben und die Anfänge als Banddrummer.

Sowohl Olli als auch Fabse haben bereits in jungen Jahren Punkbands gegründet und sind über Gospelchöre dann irgendwann auch beim Jazz und dem Unterrichten gelandet.

In diesem überaus sympathischen und vor allem witzigem Talk nehmen euch die drei ein wenig mit auf Zeitreise und erzählen übers Touren, Kaffeetrinken und natürlich vom Drumming.

Fabian “Fabse” Schmiedel

Fabse begann mit 12 Jahren Schlagzeug zu spielen. Bevor er  2006 als Lehrer für The Planet Drum anfing erhielt er zunächst eine klassische – und eine Jazzausbildung, die ihn zu einigen Jazzformationen und einem Förderprogramm der Berliner Musikschulen führte, in dem er auch  Musiktheorie und Gehörbildung erlernte.

Seit seiner Kindheit spielt er nebenbei Klavier, was seinem musikalischen Verständnis sehr dienlich ist. Diese Fähigkeit setzt er im Unterricht ein, um bei seinen Schülern die Freude an Improvisation und dem gemeinsamen Musizieren zu fördern.

Neben dem Erweitern seiner Stilistiken am Schlagzeug in den Bereichen Latin, Funk, Rock, Pop etc erlernte er auch den Umgang mit verschiedenen Percussioninstrumenten.

Der gebürtige Berliner spielt in verschiedenen Projekten die unterschiedlichsten Musikrichtungen. Eine Konstante ist seine Punkband Hausvabot, die eine feste Größe in der deutschen Szene ist und mit der er seit mittlerweile über 20 Jahren europaweit tourt und diverse Alben aufgenommen hat.

Durch seine langjährige Arbeit als Lehrer und Schlagzeuger verfügt er über ein sehr umfangreiches Repertoire. Über die Jahre hat er viel Session- und Studioerfahrung gesammelt, die er mit viel Leidenschaft an seine Schüler weitergibt.

Oliver “Olli” Kunze

der gebürtige Dresdner saß mit 7 das erste mal am Schlagzeug und verlässt es seitdem hauptsächlich zum Schlafen und Essen.

Nach 4 Jahren Privatunterricht kam Olli mit 12 ans Heinrich-Schütz-Konservatorium in Dresden. Er begriff jedoch schnell, dass Pink Panther und Oye Como Va nicht ganz seinen musikalischen Nerv trafen.

Mit 14 gründete er seine erste Punkband, spielte seinen ersten bezahlten top 40 Gig mit 15 und ist seitdem mit nationalen und internationalen Acts auf großen und kleinen Bühnen zu erleben.

2015 belegte er den Profi + Kurs beim Drumtrainer Berlin und studierte 12 Monate unter Dirk Erchinger, Christian Vinnie, Randy Black, Kenny Martin, Ron Spielmann, Onkel und vielen anderen.

Olli spielte und tourte unter anderem mit :

Betterov, Risk It!, Tamas, 2930s (BossHoss Sideproject ), Ansa Sauermann, Deathrite, Mitch Ryder, Engerling, Kaltfront uvm …

Aktuell ist er mit seiner Punkband „Skinsects“ unterwegs.

Julian Wieder is a 23-year-old drummer based in Berlin, Germany. 

Being mainly active as live- and studio musician in the RnB/Hip-Hop/Indie genre, he is currently also working as clinician, creator and teacher. Growing up, he took lessons with local drum teachers as well as Matt Garstka, Juan Carlito Mendoza, Anika Nilles and others, before moving to Osnabrück to refine his craft at the local music school with teachers such as Christin Neddens and Stephan Emig (among others).

In 2017, Julian started producing short drum videos in his home studio for Social Media (@jewlz_drums). 

Now, just few years later – having built a following of more than 36k people, which led him to worldwide recognition and cooperations with companies like Meinl, Evans and Promark – he is slowly becoming a household name in the scene, despite his young age.
