Publisher's Summary:
A stylish psychological thriller with the compelling intrigue of The Silent Wife and Turn of Mind and the white-knuckle pacing of Before I Go to Sleep - in which a woman suffering from bipolar disorder cannot remember if she murdered her friend.
Dana Catrell is shocked when her neighbor, Celia, is brutally murdered. To Dana's horror she was the last person to see Celia alive. Suffering from mania, the result of her bipolar disorder, she has troubling holes in her memory, including what happened on the afternoon of Celia's death.
Her husbands odd behavior and the probing of Detective Jack Moss create further complications as she searches for answers. The closer she comes to piecing together the shards of her broken memory, the more Dana falls apart. Is there a murderer lurking inside her...or is there one out there in the shadows of reality, waiting to strike again?
A story of marriage, murder, and madness, The Pocket Wife explores the world through the foggy lens of a woman on the edge.
Members Reviews:
Best "who done it" this year!!!
Would you listen to The Pocket Wife again? Why?
Yes, most definitely. Great story line. 5 + Stars!!! A must read!
What other book might you compare The Pocket Wife to and why?
The Pocket Wife is in a class by itself, although I think Stephen King would like this book, although it's not a horror story. To me, Susan Crawford writes very much like King. This is a true compliment!
Which scene was your favorite?
When Jack Moss confronts Leanora.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover"
Any additional comments?
Cassandra Campbell does a SUPERB job of narrating this audiobook.
Looking forward to Susan Crawford's next novel.
Maddening nonsense... I may not make it!!
I have never written a review before finishing, but I am exactly half way through this book now, and I may not be able to finish.
There is a bit of a storyline, and some unlikable characters so far, but mostly just crazy gibberish. I am trying to hang in there, and IF I do, and IF it improves in the 2nd half... I will edit my review.
**2nd half update**
I made it, and the 2nd half was definitely better than the first.
Bipolar Murder Mystery
This book does for bipolar disorder what Alice LaPlante's riveting Turn of Mind did for Alzheimer's; it gives you a window into the mind and thinking of an individual with the disorder who is also uncertain as to her own role in the murder of a friend and neighbor.
The writing is solid, the characters interesting and invested with depth and feeling. I give the overall experience 3 1/2 stars to 4 stars, despite the somewhat cloying, affected, grating, overly precise articulation of the narrator.
This book held my interest all the way through, and although the ending felt a little contrived, the same can be said for many, if not most murder mysteries, especially those full of surprises and plot twists.
I would recommend this book highly to any fans of psychological suspense.
Can't stop listening!
What made the experience of listening to The Pocket Wife the most enjoyable?
The story kept me going right down to the very end.
What other book might you compare The Pocket Wife to and why?
The writers ability to describe feelings, thoughts and in the moment experience rivals Steven King's talent.
