  • Milk It : A NIRVANA MIXTAPE
After reading Charles Cross’ excellent biography of Kurt Cobain, Heavier Than Heaven, I felt moved to collect my favorite Nirvana songs in to a (digital) mixtape, mostly so I could carry around 1 hour and 30 minutes of anguished guttural dark rocknroll to tap in to when the mood called for. I have such profound and deep-felt respect and awe for Cobain & Co’s gifts as musicians, poets and avatars and this recent journey through words and music has made me appreciate anew what this powerhouse trio brought to the world. I’m continually amazed that they were only together a handful of years and only produced three studio albums, and I can’t help but wonder what Kurt would have done in following years had he kept himself alive. There is a new level of artistry and sophistication that comes through on In Utero-era recordings, as if he was only starting to bloom, and his self-inflicted early exit stands as a great tragedy for rock n roll.
This mix pulls together tracks from Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero (mostly demos, B-sides, alt takes, etc) as well as their live albums (Reading, Portland 1989, Seattle Paramount Halloween 1991) and With the Lights Out box set.
Namaste Kurt. Here’s to hoping you’ve found your peace, and thanks for all the power chords, broken guitars and screams.

  • Acoustica V : Born 2 B Loved
Happy happy happy spring! Green growth, perky forest floor coming alive, unfurling fiddleheads, trillium, hummingbirds, currants, frogsong at night and love. Here's another gift: Acoustica V: Born to be Loved, our fifth mix in our series of acoustic-based music. Featuring songs new and old by Andrew Bird, Robin Pecknold, Fleet Foxes, Lucinda Williams, Iron & Wine, Pearl Jam, Cowboy Junkies, The Mountain Goats, The Cave Singers, Radiohead, Alexi Murdoch, The Deecmberists, R.E.M. Willie Nelson with Wynton Marsalis and Norah Jones. This is like the all-star lineup of Podcast Cafe favorite artists from over the years -- some playing acoustic instruments, others plugged-in but making music in the spirit of unplugged organic sense.

  • Chiron Transmission 1 : Golgotha
Greetings from the friendly Burners here at Destination Burning Man, and welcome to the latest mix from DJ Playaduster: "Chiron Transmissions 1 : Golgotha." Much of this podcast is shrouded in mystery and codes, but it appears to be a missive sent from the outer fringes of our galaxy, a musical message that originates from the proto-comet Chiron.

  • Our Love is Our Power
A mix of new soul, r&b love and loose-limbed funk, inspired and informed by my recent discovery of the musician Jamie Woon. Jeremy Sole dropped Woon's track "Lady Luck" on his KCRW show a couple of weeks ago, and I've been rocking it on the headphones every day since. I built this mix around 3 Jamie Woon tracks that I love, and they appear at the beginning, middle and end. Supporting the mood are jams by Raphael Saadiq, Digable Planets, Sade, Aloe Blacc, The Bees, Erykah Badu, Jamie Lidell, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Andreya Triani, Galactic, Pharcyde and the Spinners. DIG IT Y'ALL!
