I had a short conversation with a famous author about his work and he said it was in essence about the path towards self-actualization and that got me thinking?
Did a quick search and here's what I found and read from -
I don't agree with it all but it certainly got me thinking and that is always good, especially the list of Characteristics of Self-Actualized People
Characteristics of Self-Actualized People
People who have achieved ‘self-actualization’ often demonstrate some of the following characteristics,
Sense of Purpose: An understanding of what they were ‘born to do’. Everything they do to fulfill the mission resonates on a deep level.
Desire to Serve: More likely to understand how their individual purpose fits in with the rest of humanity. Service may include random acts of kindness, joining a social or political movement, and volunteer projects.
Expanded Sense of Tribe: They might identify as citizens of the world more than a member of a religion, club, or nation. Their sense of “we” is more inclusive than the norm.
Accurate Perception of Reality: They may have a good sense of who to trust and who not to trust, ‘clear-seeing’ being an attribute of self-actualization.
Equanimity: The ego’s need to avoid pain and cling to pleasure distorts reality and sound judgment. These people can face pain and insecurities, living proactively instead of reactively.
Frequent ‘Peak Experiences’: They easily enter into the flow, “losing themselves” while meditating, creating art, practicing a sport, or doing what they love. They find it easy to connect with the eternal present moment.
Creativity: Some psychologists argue that more time spent in creative flow is a shortcut to self-actualization. You don’t need to be an artist. You may have childlike innocence and a sense of playfulness that people admire.
Appreciation of the Present: Cultivating a sense of awe, wonder, spontaneity, and appreciation is a sign of a self-actualized being. Like finding joy in ordinary events long after most others would become bored and seek more stimulation.
Grounded Sense of Morality: A deep sense that guides towards distinguishing right from wrong.
Authenticity: Being less likely to blindly follow norms given to them by other people or institutions – they have more reliable motivators within.
Comfort in Privacy: Comfort being alone and with others. Self-actualized people will seek opportunities for solitude.
Acceptance of Weaknesses: Comfort facing flaws and contradictions without shame, seeing them as opportunities to improve. This attitude can help to develop skills rapidly.
Sense of Humor: This is something Maslow emphasized a lot when describing self-actualized people.
Not everyone will display all of these characteristics while self-actualizing. Some people who are not self-actualized will display some of them.
Consider them as signs, rather than rules.
