Over the last several decades, the digital revolution has changed nearly every aspect of our lives.

The pace of progress in computers has been accelerating, and today, computers and networks are in nearly every industry and home across the world.

one of my favorite authors is Ray Kurzweil and his book The Singularity Is Near, presents one of my favorite and believable visions of the future.

According to Kurzweil’s law of accelerating returns, technological progress is moving ahead at an exponential rate, especially in information technologies.

The basic concept is that today’s best tools will help us build even better tools tomorrow, which fuels the acceleration of technology.

As the pace continues to accelerate, we always ask ourselves what surprising and powerful changes are in store us ?

On this show, we will discuss threee three technological areas Kurzweil believes are poised to  change our world the most this century.

Genetics, Nanotechnology, and Robotics

Of all the technologies riding the wave of exponential progress, Kurzweil identifies genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics as the three overlapping revolutions which will define our lives in the decades to come. In what ways are these technologies revolutionary?

My colleagues back at the station are now editing the interviews from the New York City trip.  We speak to some interesting people on Ageism, Boomers in the workforce, reinventing yourself. Should begin airing end of April, beginning of May. But of course you guys will get it first.

 

 

Watching the data on your cell phone plan.  You guys have been asking me alot about data on your mobile plans. Picked up some tips from CNET and Engagdet for you guys. Now that your mobile plans are based on data since unlimited calling and texting are included in the basic charges, here are a few tips to bring down your data usage.

1. Switch to Wi-Fi wherever possible

You can save yourself from a lot of unnecessary expenditure by checking that you have got the correct log in details for Wi-Fi at work, home and on the tube. It can also help as a customer to login into The Cloud, or remote BT and Sky hotspots wherever you can.

2. Check your settings

You can turn off the unnecessary apps that have access to data by going to your smartphone’s Settings menu.

On an iPhone, open Settings > Mobile Data to see the apps that you have allowed to use data and to toggle them off accordingly.

On Android, open Settings > Data Usage > Open each app you would like to turn off and choose Restrict app background data.

3. Sync your playlists

If you use Apple Music or Spotify to listen to songs, ensure that you sync your playlists to your phone so that you can listen to them offline, which will in turn reduce your bill amount. You can save playlists of Apple Music on your handset by tapping the Cloud icon in the right-hand corner of a playlist and waiting for it to download. On the other hand, users of Spotify playlists just need to click the Available Offline toggle to ‘on’ to save them. However, note that this feature is available only for Spotify Premium subscribers.

4. Disable background app refresh

This works for iPhone users only. Turn off background app refresh by going to Settings > General > and either turn off refresh altogether or go through and choose individual apps that will not only help to cut down on your data usage, but it also has the added advantage of helping to reserve your battery life.

5. Set a data alert

You can check how much data you have used on both Android and iOS handsets. However, if you reset the limit each month to get a full idea of your average use, only then you may find this useful.

People in your 40s and 50s — you can stop calling yourself “old” now. With rising life expectancies, middle age ends a lot later than you might have thought.

A new survey of 2,000 Britons, released today, reveals that 68 is the true age at which middle age ends and “old age” begins, The Mirror reports.

The survey asked people about their views on the start of old age, with people under 35 saying it was around 61. Overall, men felt old age started a little earlier than the average, at 67, with women thinking it started at 69. Interestingly enough, people in their 60s felt old age wouldn’t begin until their mid-to-late 70s.

“Our research suggests that the lives of the over-50s have transformed rapidly in recent years. This is now an age full of ambition and opportunity for many,” Paul Flatters, who helped conduct the survey with the Trajectory Partnership, told The Huffington Post.

Of the over-65s surveyed, over six in 10 felt life had become more enjoyable after 50.

Indeed with the U.S. national life expectancy at an all-time high of 78.8 years, it’s no surprise that older Americans might feel they have plenty of opportunities for life experiences ahead of them. The research found that people over 50 felt they’d still experience major events like divorce and dating, going back to school or starting a new business.

But Flatters said there’s some bad with the good. “The bad news is that our research also suggests that some perceptions have not kept up with this reality. Over half of over-50s feel that society treats them as old when they don’t feel old,” he said. “The key lesson from our research is that the over-50s must not be treated as a single group.”

Indeed, other surveys have shown that life really does begin after 50. One 2014 survey of Britons found 58 was the age when people said they were most content with their lives. And another recent survey found that happiness starts rising around age 60 until 85.
