The Pop Break episodes

  • TV Break: August 2021 - AppleTV Plus’s Ted Lasso; Disney Plus’s Monsters at Work; HBO’s White Lotus; Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation; & The 2021 Emmy Nominations

Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break’s Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. This month, Josh is on the move, so CinemaJoes co-host Justin Mancini joins as a guest co-host.

Here’s the format of the show:

The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Justin talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including AppleTV Plus’s Ted Lasso; Disney Plus’s Monsters at Work & Behind the Attraction; FX on Hulu’s Fargo; AMC’s Kevin Can F- Himself, & HBO’s The White Lotus.

News Break – Alex, Bill, and Justin break down all the ins and outs of this years Emmy nominees including the big winners like Ted Lasso, The Mandalorian, and The Crown, as well as I May Destroy You, WandaVision, SNL, Big Budget Genre series, & Hamilton for some reason. They also get into Justin’s deep dissatisfaction with Small Axe’s many snubs.

Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Justin pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. This month, everyone had a different horse in the race. Bill found the combo of Space Jam 2, The Suicide Squad, and Woodstock 99, along with the recent Batgirl casting news, is enough to put HBOMAX over the finish line. Meanwhile, Justin stood up for historic underdog Disney Plus for their many Emmy successes, their Black Widow release, and their giant Loki finale. Finally, Alex repped for Netflix on the back of their season two releases for I Think You Should Leave, Never Have I Ever, & Outer Banks, the return of Twilight to the service, the premiere of Masters of the Universe: Revelation & Sexy Beast, the surprising success of the Fear Street Trilogy, and (effectively) leading the Emmy nominations for all networks.

Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Justin watched Netflix’s Mark Hamill & Sarah Michelle Gellar starring Master of the Universe: Revelations.

    The Chi S4E10 (Aired August 1, 2021)

Out of guilt of knowing what happened to Marcus, Jake confessed to what he saw to Jemma when she rushed home to check the cameras which were all over the house. Jake came to the defense of his brother telling her Trig saved her father’s life.

Christian asked if Keisha was his girlfriend.

Jada got a call from her doctor about her recent test results. Good news… she may not have to do another round of chemo! So Emmett threw a neighborhood party in celebration.

Even though Tiffany chose Emmett, she was flirting with Rob (Iman Shumpert) at Jada’s party. But little did we know she’d leave her bed with Emmett to meet up with Rob!

Lastly, it looks like the city will lose the mayor as we see Douda leaving town since the brutal damage he did to Marcus is on tape. Trig demanded he disappear ASAP or else he’ll release the footage to the media. Does this mean Roselyn would take his place in the office?

The season ended with lots of questions that needed a lot of answers. So we’re asking ourselves … is The Chi coming back with season 5?

  • Good Bye to All That: Loki S1

This week on Good Bye To All That, Michael T. Ford III is joined by Corey Pruitt aka TASK, Comic Twitter personality and co-host of the SuperSuit Show podcast, to discuss the MCU's latest series on Disney Plus, LOKI, starring Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as the titular character, picking up from his escape with the Tesseract during the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

    Show Topics discussed include:

    - How LOKI differed from the two event series that preceded it, and how knowing it was getting a second season affected the way the narrative was constructed.

    - The way the show benefited from tempered expectations to both raise the stakes for the rest of the MCU meta narrative and unleash a new Big Bad.

    - What the unleashed MCU Multiverse could mean for the rest of Phase 4 and beyond.

    - The role of Jonathan Majors' He Who Remains in the season 1 climax, and what we'd like to see from other Kang variants.

    - Whether the TVA worked overall, and what we think TVA 2.0 will get up to in S2.

    - Judge Renslayer, her overall effectiveness as both a character and an antagonist, and what we'd like to see from her in S2.

    - Richard E. Grant's performance as Classic Loki, and how his single episode arc in the penultimate episode was Emmy-worthy.

    - Sylvie's arc, and how it resonated for viewers who themselves experienced childhood trauma.

You can follow host Michael T. Ford III on Twitter and check out his Racial Draft Podcast and various MCU review podcasts on the Racial Draft Podcast Network.

  • The Anniversary Brothers TV Podcast: Hey Arnold! 25th Anniversary

Aaron and Josh are back for their July TV podcast. This month the brothers are commemorating Hey Arnold! for its 25th anniversary.

Hey Arnold! is a traditionally animated cartoon based on claymation shorts and comics by series creator Craig Bartlett. Nickelodeon attached the pilot to its first feature film, Harriet the Spy, which opened in theaters on July 10, 1996. Hey Arnold! officially became a Nicktoon when the series premiered on television on October 7, 1996. 100 episodes aired before the series ended on June 8, 2004. During this run Arnold returned to the big screen for his own movie in 2002. Hey Arnold! saw a brief revival in 2017 with a TV movie wrapping up the storyline set up in the show’s two-part finale, originally meant to culminate in a second theatrical film.

Arnold is a fourth grader going to school at P.S. 118. He lives in grandparents’ boarding house in the city of Hillwood. Many episodes focus on Arnold helping someone with a problem, often one of his classmates or one of the tenants of the boarding house. Notable characters include Arnold’s best friend Gerald and a girl named Helga. Helga bullies Arnold to conceal a huge crush on him.

Many actors portray Arnold, with J.D. Daniels from The Mighty Ducks voicing Arnold in the pilot and Toran Caudell of Recess playing him in Season 1. Jamil Walker Smith of Stargate Universe voices Gerald in the series’ original run while Francesca Marie Smith, another voice from Recess plays Helga. Perhaps the most notable voice actors are those playing Grandma Gertie and Grandpa Phil. Tress MacNeille is best known as the voice of Dot on Animaniacs while Dan Castellaneta is the voice of Homer Simpson on The Simpsons.

Josh and Aaron talk about the pilot and the show’s TV premiere. The brothers also discuss memorable episodes and another possible continuation or reboot on Paramount+.

For another beloved cartoon from yesteryear, you can listen to Aaron and Josh’s podcast on Dexter’s Laboratory.

Hey Arnold! is streaming on Paramount+.
