Big chunk questions (inductive thinking)
Used when people are bogged down in the HOW, the specifics, and you want them to think bigger picture or consider other options. It helps remove overwhelm and procrastination.
· Why is this important to you?
· What outcome are you look for?
· What would all that give you?
· What’s the highest intention?
· What is this an example of?
· What will it mean if you have it?
· What would it mean to you?
· What are the possibilities?
Small Chunk Questions (deductive thinking)
Used when people are more into the WHAT – ideas, big picture, vision – yet are unfamiliar with the specifics needed to achieve. This strategy simply won’t get actual results.
· How will you do that, specifically?
· When will this get done? (date/time)
· Who will be involved? (commitment/accountability)
· What part of (eg. this diagram, engine, recipe)
· What else do I need to include?
· What will this mean in practice?
Used when people think there are no other choices. They get stuck and can also end up procrastinating. Lateral thinking helps discover options.
· What’s the evidence of this?
· What’s another example?
· How else? Where else? What else? Who else?
