  • Episode 32, You’ll Never be an Eagle by Flying with the Chickens with Dr.-Col. Khallid Shabazz, US Army

Not long after converting to Islam — facing discrimination from other soldiers, disappointment from his Lutheran family, and with more than one citation for insubordination on his record — Shabazz was ready to quit the military. But a chance encounter with a Christian army chaplain not only convinced him to stay in the military but to pursue chaplaincy himself. Nearly three decades later, with his 2018 promotion to colonel, Shabazz is the highest-ranking Muslim chaplain in the U.S. Military. He serves as command chaplain for U.S. Army Central, the three-star command responsible for land operations in the Middle East, according to Army Times. As a child, Shabazz was molested by a family friend — an experience, he said, that put him in an emotional tailspin and left him an angry young man. He spent the 8th grade in special education and failed the 9th and 12th grades. Colonel Shabazz shares his story of having to come back from many setbacks in life, including falling in with the wrong crowd, drinking alcohol, which led to many drunken brawls, being beaten with a shovel, and then shot in the back. His story will inspire and challenge you to believe, belong, and become.

  • Episode 27, The Military Changed the Trajectory of my Life with Damarco Wyatt

Damarco Wyatt is a modern-day Colin Powell. As Secretary Powell wrote in My American Journey, he floundered until he discovered the military. It was the military that anchored this Brooklyn boy and took him on a journey that landed him in the highest echelons of the military and in the American government. Damarco Wyatt had a similar journey as a noncommissioned officer in the Army. A smart young man, he won five scholarships to good schools in the United States. But college bored him, so he left, and took a job at a big box store. That all changed when he saw a local man returning home while on leave from the Army. His posture, confidence, and the look of a leader broke Damarco’s trance about life. He signed up for the Army, and 25 years later he has risen to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. While in the army he returned to school and earned a degree in supply chain management. He sat with me to share what he learned about discipline, leadership, character, and more while serving his country in the US Army.

  • Episode 26, Live a Life of Limitless Possibilities with Anna Debenham

Since 2019, Anna and her team at The Insight Alliance strive to uncover the natural resilience and innate mental well-being they know to exist inside all human beings. They share this understanding in the prison system in Portland, Oregon USA. They teach how our feelings, experiences, and state of mind work, which allows people to hit the “reset button” in their lives. When we do, we too can experience real change from the inside out. Program participants have experienced outcomes including decreased stress, anxiety, and depression; improved and mended relationships; increased feelings of connection and trust; reduced obsessive and compulsive behavior and judgmental thinking; an increase in their desire to pursue an education and jobs. Incarcerated persons also become less likely to return to prison after release. These people report a general feeling of well-being as they touch that part of themselves that cannot be broken. Anna, the founder of The Insight Alliance, shares her experience of working with incarcerated people and how she has witnessed how people change from the inside out in human beings.

  • Episode 25, When Opportunity Knocks, Answer with Edward Weins

Ed Wiens has had a varied career. For almost forty years, he has worked with non-profit organizations, pastoral ministry in the Christian church, social service administrator, development director, etc. Today, Ed is a star player in the network marketing industry. Ed says that the idea of being compensated based on his ability always appealed to him. As a 10-year-old boy, Ed worked in the family side business of selling boiled crabs. His father would catch the crabs and his mother would boil them, Ed said. He was the salesman, and he went door-to-door selling boiled crabs in an Alaskan fishing village for 35 cents each. Ed also sold newspapers on street corners, so, in a way, sharing products was a way of life for him for a long time. Ed learned about network marketing from a family friend. He learned that companies paid representatives to sell their products; then, they allowed these associates to recruit others to sell their products, and the recruiter shared in the production of their sales team. Ed was hooked: “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he exclaimed. “What a concept!” And Edward Weins has been a network marketing professional for forty years. Ed joins me to share what he has learned from the industry that has given him time freedom and financial freedom.
