Ask anyone who was around in the first few years of the Premier League the biggest change and they’re likely to say the same thing… the influx of superstar foreign players. They provided English football with an injection of much-needed glamour and – in some cases – professionalism.

Jurgen Klinsmann was one of the first signings that really raised eyebrows… this was a World Cup winner joining 15th-placed Tottenham. Jake had a long chat with the German legend about his arrival in north London and what he made of the new Premier League, while we’ll also hear hilarious stories of Glenn Hoddle being desperate to keep Ruud Gullit away from Chelsea’s ramshackle training ground before signing and Martin Keown battling Arsene Wenger over a Gunners’ night out.

Our Premier League Storybook is littered with fantastic teams that won it all – but sometimes even more enchanting is the teams who just missed out. The early years of Premier League history had their share of title battles, but the one that stands above the rest and still lives in the memory of fans is the fight Newcastle United put up in 1995/96.

Jake sat down for an illuminating interview with Les Ferdinand, who spearheaded Kevin Keegan’s incredible team of ‘Entertainers’, while those around the game give us their memories of that side, and other sides who famously just missed out on football’s holy grail.

Chapter Three shows us that sometimes, it’s not all about winning…

Our first two chapters dealt with teams that changed the game in the Premier League in Manchester United and Blackburn. One club was conspicuous by their absence… Liverpool had dominated football at home and abroad in the 70s and 80s but were finding the new decade difficult to deal with.

In fact, despite having some of the most talented young players around, they became more famed for their actions off the pitch, becoming known as the Spice Boys by the late 1990s. Steve McManaman helps us separate myth from legend with tales of Robbie Williams, crazy nights out and THOSE white cup final suits. 

Meanwhile, those around the game, like Martin Keown, Peter Schmeichel and Michael Owen, give their view on the drinking culture around English football at the time and the legacy of that Liverpool side.

Chapter Three… it might not be how you remembered it.

We heard how Man United captured the first Premier League title and dominated the 1990s last time… someone surely had to challenge them in those first few years? Not many at the start of the decade would have bet money on that being Blackburn Rovers, who hadn’t troubled the top flight since the late 60s.

However, local steel magnate Jack Walker pumped money into his boyhood club to fire them to promotion in time for the Premier League’s inaugural season – and then continued to hoover up the best young talent in Britain to – in his words – ‘make Man United look cheap’.

Just a couple of years later they’d done the seemingly impossible and wrestled the title from Alex Ferguson, Eric Cantona and Co. We’ve spoken to the Premier League’s leading lights from the time about a story that seems even more incredible all these years later – including Rovers’ victorious captain Tim Sherwood and their record signing Chris Sutton.

Chapter Two is the Premier League Storybook’s first real twist…

There’s no other place to start with Chapter One of our Premier League storybook… Manchester United claimed the first Premier League title and with it the 1990s.

Without a title since the late 60s, United and their manager Alex Ferguson were under pressure after missing out on the final First Division title to Leeds. After a topsy-turvy start, the shock signing of Leeds talisman Eric Cantona changed it all, and United surged past their rivals to stake their claim as the brand-new Premier League’s team to beat.

In goal, in his second season in English football, was Peter Schmeichel, fresh from winning Euro 92 with a legendary Danish team. He went on to become one of the true legends of the Premier League, but sat down with Jake Humphrey to discuss that first title – which he puts alongside the famous Treble win – and how Ferguson built a side that dominated the decade.

You’ll also hear from some of the game’s other top names about the excitement of the new league, the first ever Premier League title race and, of course, Eric Cantona.
