When you trade oil futures it is important to understand how contango and how contract expiry work. It is not enough to know how to buy oil futures, it is important to know about the contract specifications.
From NPR News: “How low will oil prices go? One American oil benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, fell by more than 70% on Monday as global oil markets continue to grapple with a pandemic-driven collapse in demand. When a barrel of WTI hit $10.34 on Monday morning, that was the lowest price in 34 years. As it dropped into the single digits, it passed its lowest price ever. And it wasn’t done: at one point shortly after 1 p.m. WTI crude was trading at less than $5 a barrel.”
