More: The United States Oil Fund, a popular exchange-traded security known for its ‘USO’ ticker, announced another change to the fund’s makeup on Wednesday as it tries desperately to retain investors after a 77% drop this year. USCF, the manager of the fund, said that it will execute a one-for-eight reverse share split for USO that will go into effect after the close on April 28. USCF, the manager of the fund, said on Tuesday that it was temporarily suspending the issuance of so-called creation baskets. Creation baskets are how an ETF creates new shares to meet demand. The baskets hold the underlying securities, which in this case are plummeting oil futures. With the halting of these creation baskets, the ETF will essentially now trade with a fixed number of shares like a closed-end mutual fund.

When you trade oil futures it is important to understand how contango and how contract expiry work. It is not enough to know how to buy oil futures, it is important to know about the contract specifications.

One American oil benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, fell by more than 70% on Monday as global oil markets continue to grapple with a pandemic-driven collapse in demand. When a barrel of WTI hit $10.34 on Monday morning, that was the lowest price in 34 years. As it dropped into the single digits, it passed its lowest price ever. And it wasn’t done: at one point shortly after 1 p.m. WTI crude was trading at less than $5 a barrel.”

From Bloomberg: "United Airlines Holdings Inc. warned employees of bleak times and potential long-term payroll cuts despite billions of dollars in U.S. taxpayer assistance, saying the outlook for travel demand will remain depressed into next year. Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz and President Scott Kirby said that “Travel demand is essentially zero and shows no sign of improving in the near term.,”

“While we have not yet finalized changes to our schedule for July and August, we expect demand to remain suppressed for the remainder of 2020 and likely into next year.”

So, with this news, it is clear that the airlines sector is going to be facing tough times; but, does this actually make a good time to invest?

From the New York Times: "The Trump administration has reached an agreement in principle with major airlines over the terms of a $25 billion bailout to prop up an industry hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic. The Treasury Department said that Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, SkyWest Airlines and Southwest Airlines would participate. The program is supposed to help the companies pay their workers and was created as part of the economic stabilization package that Congress passed last month."
