Join us on The PrimateCast as we cover the 5th Student Conference on Conservation Science (SCCS) Bangalore – India.

The PrimateCast crossed a new border by rolling out its mobile podcasting unit to cover the meetings of the SCCS held between September 25-28, 2014, at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. This year’s conference was a great success and gathered hundreds of the best conservation researchers of Africa and Asia. So, enjoy!

The PrimateCast rolled out its mobile podcasting unit once again to cover the meetings of the International Primatological Society held between August 11-16, 2014. The theme of this year's congress, which was held at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam, was 'meeting the challenges of conserving primate diversity'.

Unlike the case at the IPS congress two years ago in Cancun, Mexico, The PrimateCast was no longer green, having had a couple of years of run-time to hone its operators' skills. The main result of this new-found savvy is a burst of podcast activity reflecting our coverage of the conference. 

Having lost our summer intern, Sofi Bernstein, to field work, we enlisted the efforts of four volunteer graduate students from KUPRI:

• Sayuri Takeshita
• Cecile Sarabian

Together, we were able to interview no fewer than 20 (!) scientists and conservationists, and we're going to share those with you over the coming weeks.

In the first installment of this five-part podcast series, we introduce the series as well as three of the four student volunteers who were so instrumental in making this happen. 

After speaking with them about their experiences at the conference for the first half of the program, we hear from two of the three main organizers of the conference: Dr. Bert Covert and Dr. Steve Schapiro. 

Dr. Covert provides an entertaining account of how this congress came together, while Dr. Shapiro, as Treasurer and VP for membership of IPS, gives us a run down of the business side of things, as well as an anticipatory look into upcoming IPS congresses.

The PrimateCast rolled out its mobile podcasting unit once again to cover the annual meetings of the Japan Society for Animal Psychology between July 19-21, 2014. The society's aims are to support a better understanding of human nature, particularly in the realm of cognition, through the lens of the animal mind; in other words, its members study the cognitive capacities of nonhuman animals to give clues about the evolution of our own considerable mental abilities.

This year's congress was held in Inuyama, hometown of the Kyoto University Primate Research Institute (KUPRI), and notably was conducted for the first time entirely in English. The president of the organizing committee this year was Dr. Tetsuro Matsuzawa of KUPRI, and there were an impressive number of speakers from around the world invited to participate and present at this event. As such, Andrew along with summer intern Sofi Bernstein decided to get on over there and talk with as many of these invitees as possible.

In this the fifth and final of five installments we hear Dr. Raman Sukumar speak about his work in the conservation and ecology of Asian elephants in India and around the world.

Topics of discussion include the major issues surrounding elephant conservation, such as human-elephant conflict, and what solutions are being developed to mitigate these issues and protect the future of the Asian elephant.

Dr. Sukumar brings his vast knowledge and experience regarding elephants and tropical forest ecology into this interview, eloquently detailing the current and future problems facing Asian elephants, including the potential impacts of continued climate change dynamics.

Topics of discussion include sensory and motor lateralization, possible evolutionary and ecological hypotheses for why brain lateralization exists and a bit about the context of his own work within Polish science.
