Wayne Robinson, editor of Print21, and Lindy Hughson, publisher of Print21 and PKN Packaging News, bring us a review and analysis of the major developments, issues and trends emerging in the ANZ print industry during May.
This month's edition was recorded at the Auspack trade show in Melbourne, which had a big focus on sustainable printing this year. We discuss Detpak's innovation to enable its clients to move from plastic to fibre-based packaging, as well as developments from other packaging printers including Opal and Zipform.
The sustainability theme this month continues as we celebrate the outdoor Innovator of the Year award winner, Nigel Spicer, of Cactus Imaging, for the new Smart Skin billboard media.
We also discuss the ins and outs of Trimatt receiving the APPMA's Excellence of Australian Manufacturing Award for its Cardline 7000 system.
Excitingly, we discuss the first new printing plant to have opened in Australia for several years, ePac. The shortage of skilled workers, an issue exacerbated by the recent removal of print apprenticeships from the Australian Apprenticeships government priority list, is also highlighted.
Following this we explore the launch of Heidelberg's cloud-based Prinect Direct, which is helping to automate both production and administration, and will ultimately lead to print buyers effectively inputting all the data for the job, with the workflow scheduling the job.
Finally we look at the impact the Ukrainian war has had on their print industry and what can be done to support the companies and their staff.

Following this we look into the outdoor and display sector, which seems to be returning with force, following a dip during the Covid pandemic, and the labelling sector that rode a strong wave during Covid and is now offering opportunities to all.
We wrap up the episode with the news of ePac's expansion less than six months after opening its business in Melbourne, and finish examining the exciting return of trade shows in Australia and overseas. In this episode, Wayne Robinson, editor of Print21, talks with Ajay Unni, the founder of cyber security business, StickmanCyber. No stranger to the print industry, and a member of the 2020 NSW government cyber security taskforce, Ajay understands the threats and the importance of cyber security to printers.
Data security is one of the biggest challenges for the print industry due to their use of multiple online suppliers, and the often confidential data they hold on behalf of clients. In this podcast, Ajay explains why print businesses are a target, and how the unprotected are susceptible to the four main types of cyber crime. He covers the need for defence against the unpredictable threats of cyber attack, and presents a clear step-by-step approach to security programmes and policies that can dissuade casual opportunist criminals.
Ajay also recommends network monitoring and response tools, as well as the Australian government's guides for SMEs to help contribute towards national cyber security. We wrap up with justification for investment in effective cyber security, and insights into the harsh realities of cyber vulnerabilities and their repercussions.
