  • EP03 - Ben Christophers - "The Man Behind the Curtain"

We talk to songwriter, artist and producer Ben Christophers about his transition from his own solo artist project into a mentor and producer for other artists trying to realise their musical visions. From his first attempts at peering ‘behind the curtain’ at how records are made, to getting his hands dirty co-producing Bat For Lashes mercury nominated album “The Bride”, we hear about how Ben takes time to set the scene at the start of any collaboration, the synthesiser he can’t do without, his favourite microphone choices, and his no prisoners approach to making tea.

The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews.

Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he’s been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises.

Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London.

  • EP02 - Charlie Hugall - "Always Do The Thing"

We speak to producer / mixer Charlie Hugall, about how a snap-decision to do a favour for DJ duo Queens of Noize and drive them to Reading and Leeds festival led to his breakthrough job producing Florence + The Machine’s ‘You’ve Got The Love’. We also discuss his more recent success on Celeste’s #1 debut album ‘Not Your Muse’, which leads to some fascinating discussion on the myriad ways of coaxing the best vocal performance from an artist.

Charlie was away from the studio at the time of recording, so his audio is recorded via earpods - please accept our apologies for any reduction in sound quality.

Perhaps best known for his work producing London Grammar as part of the production duo MyRiot with Roy Kerr, Tim’s credits also include Aurora, Halsey, and Walking On Cars amongst many others. We talk about making those London Grammar records, as well as hearing about what it’s like working with bona fide legends such as Paul McCartney, Ronnie Wood and Noel Gallagher. Over the course of the pandemic, Tim has perfected his workflow for recording artists remotely - and as we hear, he’s learned some fascinating lessons during the process.
