Have you ever wondered what to do if you have so many different ideas and passions that you’re not sure how to get started choosing a niche?
My guest, Paula Engebretson, can relate. And she just might be able to help you find more focus, too.
Paula is a Certified Life Coach and productivity fanatic. She helps fellow ADHDers take action, finish what they start, and work with their brains to create the life they want.
And as with many coaches, her niche stemmed from her own experiences and challenges.
She started out with a PhD in musicology, studying the history of music (which sounds pretty cool).
But she struggled with staying focused as a result of yet-undiagnosed ADHD.
While searching for time management strategies and other tools to help herself, she discovered life coaching.
At the same time, as a professor, Paula saw elements of herself in some of her ADHD students and was diagnosed at the age of 31.
So, how did she go from a new diagnosis to coaching others with ADHD?
In this episode, Paula tells us all about how she started using blogging (and later a podcast) as a creative outlet, sharing time management, productivity and focus solutions that had worked for her…even before she realized ADHD was a part of the picture.
Not surprisingly, many of the clients who came to her for this sort of help happened to have ADHD diagnoses, as well.
So, her messaging evolved to fit her people. And a niche was born.
There is so much goodness in this conversation, and I think everyone will relate to something here.

Have you ever wondered how you can turn your own struggle and passion into a successful coaching business that you love?
In this episode, I’m speaking with Lisa Salisbury of Well With Lisa. She is a health and weight loss coach for women who have obsessively dieted in the past.
The women she works with often feel lost when it comes to losing weight unless they have an app, book, or detailed process to follow. Lisa helps them lose weight by checking in with themselves rather than an app.
As is often the case with amazing coaching niches, Lisa’s own journey has led to her niche.
I often refer to this as “The Path,” in which you look back on your past experiences to determine who you can best serve now.
She coaches on the thing that was a struggle for her and that she overcame herself.
Lisa was a “chronic dieter” in her past and even got her friends to join in whatever diet or weight loss trend she was following at the time.
She tried a lot of things that didn’t work for her and eventually realized that she was really obsessing over tracking, going so far as to stand in front of the fridge eating at night to get her macros in (even though she wasn’t hungry) and weighing her food at the dinner table.
She knew that things weren’t right and she needed to take a step back.
An obsession with dieting and healthy eating is accepted within our culture, but it takes such a mental toll. Lisa knew that there were a lot of other women struggling in the same way that she did.
What she learned through coaching, and the way she helps her clients now, is that weight loss and wellness aren’t all about the numbers. Your thoughts and feelings about food play a huge role, as well.
Lisa and I talk quite a bit about The Model in this episode, developed by Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School, because it really can apply to any situation, including weight loss.
In fact, one of Lisa’s favorite exercises is plugging her client’s scale weight as a circumstance. A numerical fact. “I’m too heavy” is not a circumstance; it’s a thought. This tends to open up a whole new conversation and take away the drama of weighing themselves.
Lisa’s clients track their food through simple journaling, and they also dive deeper into the thoughts behind challenges like why they’re eating when they aren’t even hungry.
The end result? Women come through the program thinking about food less - less emotional desire for food and less obsessing - and still lose weight!

Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to take a career you’ve had for more than 3 decades and turn it into a fabulous niche?
I’m so excited to have Wendy Crabbe with me on this episode of the Profitable Niche Podcast.
Wendy helps health professionals and women over 50 lose up to 50 pounds so they can feel great in their bodies for another 50 years.
We’re talking all about her niche and how it has evolved over time.
Wendy’s niche is particularly interesting because she has been able to incorporate 38 years of nursing experience in addition to her personal weight loss journey to help other busy women, nurses and health practitioners lose weight and keep it off.
She’s also been through a few different versions of her niche, getting more specific each time on who she can serve best.
Wendy first discovered life coaching when she was struggling to lose weight herself.
She was tired of dieting and feeling deprived and hungry all the time.
She had tried all the things and thought her hormones were to blame.
Then, she came across a book by our mentor, Brooke Castillo, called “If I’m So Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight?”.
It was exactly how Wendy felt in that moment and how so many of her clients feel when they come to her now.
She had 2 Masters degrees, worked in health care and still couldn’t figure out how to lose the weight.
That year, at the age of 56, Wendy lost 55 pounds. She also experienced transformations far beyond weight loss through working with a coach.
And when she figured out ways of losing weight that she’d never seen before, she felt compelled to tell everyone about it.
So, she became certified herself.
As happens so often with niches, Wendy’s ideal client is really a past version of herself. But her niche has evolved over time, becoming more specific with each new version.
She’s sharing her story of how her niche came to be and why she once felt resistant to working with the people who are now her best clients.
And, of course, you’ll hear her advice for other life coaches starting out.

I’m really excited to have Suzanne Dayton and Kacey Hayes of LevelUp Co. on this episode of the podcast.
These are the women who support me in having a productive, beautiful business. Basically, Suzanne and Kacey handle all of the back-end details that I don’t want to, and they’re amazing at it!
So, I invited them here today to talk about their own niche journey: How they started out individually and how they met, started collaborating and have now created this fantastic business together.
They are marketing experts and executive virtual assistants who amplify the voice of coaches and help them save time, increase productivity and grow.
We work together every day, but it was so fun to sit down and actually hear the story of how their business and their niche came to be.
Hearing where they started and where they are now, there are some common themes.
Both women reached out for mentorship and support early in their businesses, and they credit this with being able to move forward more quickly than they could have if they’d waited to get the support later on.
They’re also sharing what they think the other’s superpowers are and what they each bring to the table that makes the partnership work so well.
This idea of complementing strengths is so powerful and is one you can use whether you work solo or as part of a team.
When they share their advice to other entrepreneurs who are figuring out their niche? I was only a little surprised to hear them give the same answer.
In fact, it’s a concept that comes up for a lot of my clients, too.
And of course, we get into the brain drama that appears in various stages of business.
Suzanne and Kacey say that one of the best things about working in partnership and with a team is that they can support each other when that drama comes up. And they’re able to help their clients in this way, too.

In this episode of The Profitable Niche Podcast, Tinka shares her story, her “aha” moment and advice to entrepreneurs struggling with their niche.
Tinka is a chaos counselor and space solver, who helps people transform their lives by transforming their homes.
She works directly with people in their homes and uses decluttering, organizing and redesign to transform their outer spaces and, in doing so, transform their inner lives. Because when our homes feel good, we feel good.
It’s so interesting to hear Tinka talk about how all of her past life and career experiences came together to form her niche.
She tells us about moving around the world as a child, reorganizing cabinets when she went to visit family and friends’ homes and using her background in social work, public health and project management to support her clients on so many different levels.
When Tinka’s children were very young, she had an “aha” moment. While working in academia, a grad student of hers came in and asked, “would you want your kids to stay in a job they weren’t happy in?”
I realized that she wouldn’t and started (that very day), building her business on the weekends.
Tinka had felt like she had to keep going in a certain direction because of her education and expectations that she and others had for her.
She feared that her new business wasn’t serious or academic enough. That it wasn’t what she was “supposed to” be doing.
She may not have known how all the pieces would ultimately come together but took the different elements of her interests, experiences and passion and created this amazing niche.
Now, she loves going into people’s homes, supporting them through times of transition, and having deep conversations about how to make their homes reflect and support who they are.
Her advice to those still struggling to choose a niche:
Really think deeply about what makes you feel good. Be honest with yourself and ignore expectations. What do you really, truly love to do?
Don’t be afraid of joy.
Just like people feel good when their homes tell a personal story, your niche should reflect your story, as well.

Have you ever wondered how someone stuck in really deep niche drama gets themselves unstuck and has a fabulous niche they love?
Crystal Haitsma, The Parenting Coach, is here telling us how she did just that.
Crystal is a Certified Life Coach and Canadian homeschooling mom of 4. She practices connection-based parenting and helps moms transform their parent-child relationships by focusing on themselves first.
She believes that moms often set the tone for the household, so when they the way they respond and connect, it trickles down through the whole family.
Powerful stuff!
But Crystal wasn’t always so sure about her niche.
In fact, she says that in her first year of business she did all the things they tell you NOT to do!
And a combination of niche drama and action taking tendencies meant she was taking lots of scattered action without any real direction.
Crystal learned about life coaching and immediately jumped into a certification with The Life Coach School.
She created a parenting course early on but didn’t feel ready to commit to a niche as a parent coach because she was still in the middle of her own transformation as a mom.
So, she created another course on business, then overeating, then a re-vamped business course, emotional intelligence for teens and tweens, launched a membership for moms…you get the idea.
After lots of coaching and narrowing down ALL the things, she was down to two - she loved both business and parent coaching and struggled to choose just one.
She was interested in so many different things and didn’t want to feel tied down or constrained.
She also knew that she was doing too much and to get the results she wanted, she needed focus and simplify her business.
It came down to one question…
What do I LOVE? What do I feel passionate about?
About a year ago, Crystal decided to go all in on parent coaching. No looking back.
Today, she still gets teary-eyed when she talks about what she does. She says, “It’s amazing that I get to do this. Being able to change lives and see the transformation is just the best.”

There’s no way I can get all of this done.
Something’s going to be forgotten.
I’m gonna screw it up.
I just don’t know where to start.
These thoughts are not serving you.
If anything, they make you feel even more anxious and stressed.
And before you know it, you’re running around trying to do it all rather than focusing on what you really have to do.
I see this play out all the time in people who are trying to choose a niche.
They tell themselves…
I don’t know where to start.
I don’t know how to pick a niche.
I’ll never figure it out.
This is impossible.
We ALL have garbage thoughts like these sometimes.
But if we buy into them it creates a feedback loop, and we end up spinning instead of planning and taking the actions we need to take.
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You tell yourself you don’t know where to start. So you do nothing.
You tell yourself it will never work. So it doesn’t.
In this episode, I’m giving you two simple but powerful strategies to shift your thoughts, take intentional action and get it done!

There is a wide range of pricing out there for coaching, whether it be one-on-one or group programs.
If you’ve been feeling confused and doubting how to price your own offers, this is the episode for you.
I’m talking about all things related to pricing your offers and the psychology behind it.
We often look at goods, products, or services and think the value is intrinsic. That the price tag is based on something solid and definitive.
When really, marketing and pricing are completely based in psychology.
We typically think if something is more expensive, then it must be better quality (even if that isn’t really the case).
There’s no magic answer when it comes to pricing, but there is an equation you can use to determine the right price for your offer and your ideal clients.
In fact, there are three main factors you need to consider when pricing your offer.
And you may be surprised to learn that free or low-cost offers can be harder to sell.
You also want to be sure that once they buy, your clients will actually follow through on the program so they get the results they want.
A lot of this has to do with not only what you’re offering but WHO you’re offering it to.
That’s where your niche comes in.
The more clear you are on who your ideal client is, the better you’ll be able to anticipate their spending habits and how they perceive value.
Here’s an example from my own business:
When I set the price for my signature program, Dial Your Niche in 5 Hours, I took all the pieces of the pricing equation into account.
It’s not priced based on the amount of TIME it takes to go through the course. Instead, the price is based on the VALUE of the results.
What it’s worth to my clients to have a clear niche. Which means they can then go out and find clients for themselves and start making more money.
So not only will they have the financial return on that investment of their time and money, they’re also going to feel a lot less stress and more ease when it comes to their coaching business.

In fact, she’s actually one of the reasons I started doing niche coaching.
The first time we met in person, on the way to a Mastermind, we stopped into a couple of shops in this tiny little town.
This woman literally put together 4 full outfits in about an hour.
My jaw dropped.
I was amazed, and told her that I (and the world) needed her help.
Her response was, “doesn’t everyone know how to do this?”
Estelle’s superpower is putting together outfits and shopping, but she didn’t even realize it!
This was something that was always there as an interest or a passion. And even though she already has a fantastic career as an attorney, she was able to incorporate this into a successful business.
And it’s about so much more than clothes. She helps people to dress in a way that makes them FEEL good.
Change the experience of women getting dressed in the morning from stressful and unpleasant to feeling put-together and confident, it sets the tone of the whole day and how they show up.
It’s also about saving time. Not everyone likes to shop, and it can be frustrating to walk through store after store and not end up with a put-together look.
When it comes to your niche, your clients are happy when you help them save time and avoid pain, discomfort or frustration.
Your clients are paying for the result you can give them.
Estelle is such a great example of this.
