Heartstopper is a British coming-of-age romantic comedy television series on Netflix, adapted from the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman. Written by Oseman herself, the series primarily tells the story of Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), a gay schoolboy who falls in love with classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), whom he sits next to in his new form. Joining me this week for a Proper Full-On Gay Crisis is special guest Emily as well as Leo and Aimee from The Rainbow Project. Spoiler Alert - In this special release we talk about Heartstopper Spin off novella This Winter which takes place during book 4 of the Heartstopper series.
We talk about some of the difficult situations newly out queer people overcome during the holidays like being out to some family members and not others and serve up advice on how to deflect unwelcome or inappropriate questions from enthusiastic family member. We pause to reflect on supporting people with eating disorders and the stigma attached to mental health and mental illness.

About Elle, from the Heartstopper Fandom:
Elle Argent, portrayed by Yasmin Finney, is best friends with Tao, Charlie and Isaac. Elle is white and multi-ethnic, with her father being from the United Kingdom and her mother's family being from Egypt. Elle is very tall for her age, standing at 6'1" (the same height as Nick). She is extremely beautiful, with dark brown wavy hair, light brown skin, and dark eyes hidden away by black round glasses. She's often seen wearing wavy sun dresses or skirts with patterns made by herself.

We talk about Section 28 which banned the promotion of homosexuality in UK schools during the 80's, 90's and 00's and also about the new "Don't Say Gay" legislation taking hold in some US States.

Harry is suspended for the fight, and Charlie's friendship with Tao is still strained. Depressed, Charlie quits rugby and ignores Nick. Tao and Nick bond and find common ground on wanting Charlie to be happy. Tao reconciles with Charlie, who also confronts Ben for being abusive. Nick tells Charlie that he does not want to break up and they kiss. On a date at the seaside, Nick reveals his plan to come out and to tell their friends, which makes Charlie happy. Later that day, he comes out to his mother, who accepts him.

Nick thinks he might be bisexual; Charlie tells him to take his time. Nick comes out to Tara and Darcy, who suggest a double date. After Elle reveals she has feelings for Tao, the group then secretly make it a triple date, hoping to set the two up. On the date, Elle notices their intentions and confronts them, saying she does not want any more change in her life and wants to protect her friendship with Tao, though she is happy for Nick and Charlie. That day, there is an orchestral concert with Truham and Higgs. Tara angrily leaves after hearing homophobic comments; Darcy calms her down and they go back to perform.

Nick, played by Kit Connor, is about to cancel the date with Imogen when she reveals that her dog died, and Nick reverts his plan because he feels sorry for her. Charlie, played by Joe Locke, invites Nick to his 15th birthday celebration, which happens to be on the same day as Nick's date, but he decides to be with Charlie. Tao tells Charlie about Nick and Imogen. Nick overhears the two of them, later clarifying to Charlie before explicitly admitting his feelings for him, which Charlie reciprocates. The next day, Nick explains to Imogen that he does not like her romantically. Imogen thanks him for his honesty.

Nick interupts him with a kiss, explains that he it isn't that he didn;t want to kidd Charlie, it's just that he's so confused; He asks Charlie if he minds keeping it a secret and Charlie tells him its ok, he does not need to publicly declare anything. At school, they spend more time together while eating lunch. After a rugby game, Nick visits Charlie in the sick bay and is briefly interrupted by Isaac.
