I feel like I’ve been promising you this episode for a while!

Today I share my experiences of owning two yoga studios, and the good, the bad, and the ugly truth of it all.

I completely understand the desire of owning your own space and all the joy that this can bring, but DO NOT sign on the dotted line until you know your numbers.

The yoga studios smashing it in 2024 are the ones going beyond the scope of a weekly schedule, they’re the ones that are building a community around the physical space, and who then buy into everything the studio has to offer.

Today’s episode is inspired by the wisdom of Stephen Braybrook, aka the Movement Man, who lost his battle to Pancreatic cancer way too young in 2023.

I trained with Stephen a handful of times but he was one of those people who left a HUGE imprint on me and his relentless questioning of conventional wisdom when it came to how the human body actually worked backed up with sound scientific research lit me up!

His advice that never left me -  “break a norm”.

It ties into one of my favourite sayings ‘definition of madness is doing the same thing expecting a different result’.

Whatever you are stuck or frustrated with, whatever you want to change right now if you don’t break a norm and do something different from what you are currently doing then stuck is where you will stay.

We all need support, especially when working with the human body and in therapeutic modalities, just like yoga teachers and other bodyworkers do.

We all need to be guided in refining and developing teaching skills, and inspired with new ideas and approaches,

We all need someone who will know the answers to those business questions that are not covered in foundation yoga teacher training courses.

We all need someone who can help compassionately guide us through the wobbles of the mind to reach our full potential.

We all need someone who we can bounce ideas off, who has been where we are now and can use all that experience to guide us.

I think you all need me in your life!

Mentorship should be the industry standard for yoga teachers, I truly believe it is madness that so many teachers choose to go it alone after investing hours of time and money in training to be a yoga teacher.

I learnt to value of support and guidance from my years spent in secondary education.  We can look to other therapeutic modalities and see that ongoing support is the norm.

If you’re a yoga teacher hold off from doing another training course, although my mentoring programme is also 100 hours of further training and say yes to the support you’ve been looking for.

Welcome to part 3 of my 3-part series where I am exploring 3 of the 7 energy centres, the Chakras, and how they relate to how we feel and the actions we take.

The heart and root centres support us to open the throat centre, and here is where we do all our talking, aka marketing and selling!

The throat centre, also known as the Vishuddhi Chakra, governs our vocal cords, it’s where we communicate.  Think of all the places where you use words and communicate in your business, from both the written to the spoken form.

Feeling able to stand in our power and speak our truth from the throat centre will make talking to people, communicating, building connections and telling people about our offers, aka selling, flow with far more ease.

The throat centre is so important to us entrepreneurs!

Welcome to part 2 of my 3-part series where I am exploring 3 of the 7 energy centres, the Chakras, and how they relate to how we feel and the actions we take.

This week it’s the big one, the powerful one, my favourite one!

The heart centre, also known as the Anahata Chakra.

This is the seat of our unconditional love, the place where we create.  Anahata means unstruck sound, the sound already exists, it is yet to be heard, yet to be created, but the energy of it is there ready and waiting.

All sound is created by two objects striking together, the heart centre is where this sound manifests.

Put simply it’s where we create from, supported by the stability of our roots, when we truly tap into the hollering of the heart ain’t nothing going to stop us!

Before heading off into action, before deciding to say yes, pause and feel into your heart, and be guided by this energy, heart frequency is the most powerful energy we have.

Welcome to the first of my 3-part series where I am going to explore 3 of the 7 energy centres, the Chakras, and how they relate to how we feel and the actions we take.

The more I practice yoga and run my business, the more I see the interconnectedness of it all.   If energy is everything, how can we work with the energy and move in harmony with our unique energy systems to better inform the actions we take?

Within the practice of Yoga, some traditions work with the 7 energy centres located on the central channel of the spine.  The root chakra, Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine.

This is the energy of stability, connecting us to our roots down to the earth beneath us.  Through this connection, we can utilise the earth to support us and discharge any energy that is not ours or is no longer serving us.

The root chakra is the seat of our Kundalini Shakti, the powerful serpent energy of creation, think about what may mean in terms of your creative endeavours in your business!

Grounding ourselves, and giving time to connect to our roots, helps to support us in the actions we take and in the navigation of external forces that can interrupt our intended plans.

Walking barefoot on the grass, rooting through the pelvis when seated and supine relaxation practices all help us to connect to this energy and work with it effectively.

I am in the process of starting something new after a deep knowing, and a whole host of signs from the universe!

If you have an established business you’ll know how hard it can be to break that norm and to do something new, when you’ve spent so long crafting your persona.

Or perhaps you’re employed but have this calling to do something else, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your current reality!

All of it is hard.

It is 4 years to the day when my in-person studio-based yoga business shut down literally overnight!  Today I wanted to share with you the new branch to my offering, but it’s not quite ready.

However, if you are female, in business or want to start one, want to do more of what you love and make money - all I can say is WATCH THIS SPACE! 

Everything happens for a reason and this episode was needed today, it reminded me of all that has changed and all that is possible.

Nothing is stronger than the vibration of the heart, nothing was going to take away the business I’d spent 10 years at that point building.  The offer of money from my mum to tie me over the 12 weeks of lockdown (boy we had no idea), gave me so much fire in my belly to not sit back and worry about buying loo roll, but transform my cash-based in-person business, with no email marketing, low key social media and to be honest no idea how this online course world worked to where it is today.

I’ve blown my own mind in terms of what I have created!

Remember the light in my shines in you and creation from the heart space is available to us all, whatever that may be.

I’ve also learnt to let go, not be attached to outcomes and importantly take crazy messy action, without perhaps fully knowing the plan, the universe does though!

I cannot believe the serendipity of this week’s episode after last week, where I spent 30-plus minutes persuading you to set up that email list!

I get it, using social media feels like the easiest option, most of us use Facebook and Instagram, so it feels very doable when it comes to using it in our business.

I do believe that you should use social media and I am massively grateful to both Facebook and Meta for providing what is effectively a free platform to grow my community and sell my offers.  There is an awful lot that is good about social media.

But you have to be fully aware it is borrowed land, and you can lose your account at any time, even if you have 2-step authentication set up.  Regardless of how big or small your account is.  No one is protected from waking up one day and finding all of it gone.

This is exactly what happened to a teacher in my mentoring programme this week.

Her account was hacked, she did have 2-step authentication set up and she did lose her personal account of 17 years, along with her business pages.

It is devastating for her.  But thanks to the support in our mentoring programme and some epic advice from her mentoring (aka me), this event is now something that is positive.  This event is now something that is causing a fresh new wave of visibility and marketing into her yoga business.   And who doesn’t want this?

This is the power of mentorship.

This is why mentorship should be the industry standard for all yoga teachers.

This is why all women in business, all female serviced-based entrepreneurs need support.

We are not meant to navigate these moments alone!
