January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Dr. Nissi Hamilton, President and CEO of Nissi’s Network, Inc. is an Activist, a Navy Veteran, a sexual abuse advocate and a survivor of human trafficking. One of the best ways to help combat human trafficking is to raise awareness and learn more about how to identify victims. 

Donnell Cooper, President of the Greater Houston Frontiers Club, is back.  The Greater Houston Frontiers Club (formerly North Houston Frontiers Club) has been a staple in the Houston community and conscious in serving students with scholarships.  We talk about the 34th Anniversary of the Greater Houston Frontiers Club Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Program on Monday, January 17, 2022. This year will be a virtual presentation of our program airing 9am on KHOU-11. Our theme this year is "I am My Brother’s Keeper."

Teresa Brewer, Executive Director of the Black Heritage Society, and Lewis Johnson, Chair of MLK Festival, reminds us of the 44th Annual “Original MLK Day Parade & Festival and Weekend Celebration in Downtown Houston.  Following the parade is the Houston MLK Festival downtown City Hall on Jan. 17, 2022, starts immediately after the parade until 5 p.m.  Featuring live musical performances, kid-friendly activities, art, craft vendors, marketing booths, great food, and more!  Free for the public to attend.

The local nonprofit Houston Furniture Bank continues to serve local families and individuals in need here in the Greater Houston region – now with extended hours at its two Furniture Outlet Store locations. The Houston Furniture Bank Outlet Stores – located in Houston and the Woodlands – utilize proceeds raised from the sales of gently-used furniture to provide much needed home essentials to local families and individuals who otherwise could not afford them. In essence, Houston Furniture Bank is “Making Empty Houses Homes.”

Nancy Dalton is the Head of Community Partnerships for Underserved Populations in Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer business.  In the face of Covid, her team drove the launch of Amazon’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) acceptance program, which enables SNAP recipients the opportunity to purchase groceries online using their EBT card. Most recently, her team launched a local food access program with the goal of giving residents living in urban food deserts more options to find affordable, quality and diverse groceries.

Mr. Kenneth Rodgers, Founder of Operation Love Non-Profit Organization.  The ‘Operation Love’ project grew out of a love for the children and families of Third Ward. It is a project of the Tre Missional community in partnership with community businesses and other ministries in the greater Houston area. Our missional community currently mentor students in our target school.

Black Entrepreneurs Week (BEW) is a full week dedicated to bringing recognition to the efforts of Black owned businesses. Through a series of events and promotional campaigns, BEW will create opportunities that will help with the growth of entrepreneurship and wealth building initiatives in the community.  Phillip Yates, CEO of EQUILIBERTY INC. talks all about it. 

The BakerRipley Houston Turkey Trot is an annual event that supports the mission of BakerRipley, a nonprofit that has served this region for 114 years.  Frederick Goodall from BakerRipley joins us to discuss.

Latasha Jackson, Program Grant Coordinator for the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas, is on the show. Epilepsy is the third most common neurological condition, and one in twenty-six people in the United States will develop epilepsy in his or her lifetime due to abnormal brain development, illness, brain injury, or unknown causes. Living with epilepsy can have its challenges.
