The median hospice stay in the United States is 17 days.

Not months. Days. So why do so many patients reach hospice with almost no time left?

The answer probably isn't a lack of information. In 1995, researchers ran a $28 million trial called SUPPORT across five teaching hospitals with more than 9,000 seriously ill patients. Physicians received individualized survival estimates. Every patient was assigned a specially trained nurse to elicit preferences and facilitate advance care planning.

It changed nothing. Not the timing of DNR orders, not documentation, not pain control, not resource use.
