Visual research representations include inquiry where researchers

collect visuals created by participants,

explore researcher-prompted visuals,

introduce visuals to elicit data,

consider preexisting visuals in context,

explore serendipitously produced visuals—produced during observations and

create visuals as a reflection of new research understandings

Poemish representations of research are characterized by exhibiting features of poetry and making an effort to blend the aesthetics of poetry and scientific research into something that is poemlike, or poemish. It is within this safe space that new poets may work aesthetically in research.

Publish and Persevere: The Publication Process 

Harry Wolcott wrote that research has not occurred unless it is published.

One way to make sense of this statement is research should be disseminated in a form that continues to be accessible to others.

For example, if research is disseminated through an in person oral conference presentation, how can anyone other than the attendees access it?

Pratt (2008) “We are known, as a profession and as individual scholars, by what we write and what we publish. However, as a profession, we tend to be more forthcoming about how to conduct studies than we are about publishing them.”

I wholeheartedly agree, and therefore, the primary purpose of this chapter and podcast is to bring transparency to the publication process.

The phrase “publish or perish” is ominous and can make you feel nervous years after becoming well published. I advocate for turning the phrase on its head and helping others publish and persevere.

Towards this goal I am going to walk listeners through the publication process for an article step-by-step.

Picasso said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

Considering Picasso’s quote, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

What might Picasso’s advice mean to us as qualitative writers?

In part after we understand the "rules" of research, we can begin to bend the rules.

But to get there, I believe you must know how to write the qualitative thematic research article. This ability may be what helps you secure a research assistantship, a first professor position, or tenure.

The qualitative dissertation currently and excitingly has developed into forms of representation outside of the “traditional” five chapters.

In this podcast, I set forth guidance and advice, assuming that readers will think with and adapt the material for their unique contexts, aspirations, and assets, touch on the traditional qualitative dissertation—the textbook has highly detailed information in this area, review innovative dissertations, including manuscript dissertations and art-influenced qualitative dissertations—plays, art, research poetry, and medleys.
