In this episode, I sit down with my teacher and dear friend, Chantel TwoCrows, for a raw and honest conversation about addiction through the mythic lens of Persephone’s descent into the underworld.
We explore the idea that addiction is not a moral failure, but a form of unfinished initiation, a sort of a descent that never got the chance to complete and transform us.
Chantel shares how she found herself inside the world of alcoholism - not through her own drinking, but through a partners' entangled family. Though she didn’t personally struggle with alcohol, she was deeply impacted by the trauma that addiction created in that world.
She also opens up about her complex relationship with cannabis. While it didn’t wreak havoc like alcohol, it quietly controlled her life—keeping her caught in a similar pattern of avoidance and emotional disconnection.
This conversation itself became a kind of ceremony. We recorded it across three separate sessions, peeling back deeper layers each time. What emerged is not just a discussion of descent — it’s a lived descent. One that honors the underworld and the wisdom that can only be gathered through a personal journey to the depths of oneself.
