During my freshman year of college, I worked the early-morning janitorial shift from 4:00 to 7:00 a.m. in the athletic facility.

One morning, someone handed me a commercial floor-cleaning machine and sent me off to clean the showers.

There was just one small problem.

Nobody had really explained how to use it.

Every day, our lives intersect with people we recognize but barely know—the neighbor we wave to, the person ahead of us in line, the stranger across a waiting room.

For a few moments, their lives brush against ours before we each move on.

This reflection is about what might change if we remembered that behind every face is an entire life: complicated, hopeful, difficult, funny, and unfinished.

What is it about coming home?

Sometimes it happens before we even reach the front door.

A familiar street.

A landmark we’ve seen a thousand times.

A place filled with ordinary moments we never realized we would someday treasure.

But, more and more I wonder if home is only about a place.

Maybe home is also found in the people around us who, in an unspoken way, let us know our protective shields can finally come down…

You don’t have to pretend here.

You don’t have to earn your spot.

There’s a place for you.

This particular trip to the grocery store becomes an increasingly ridiculous contest between one stubborn grocery cart...

And one equally stubborn shopper…
