It is time to get back to the basics of race and ethnic relations and find better SOLUTIONS for all the types of racial and ethnic conflicts that are occurring in our world today. My podcast shows in 2024 will tackle many of the neglected and sensitive racial and ethnic relations issues that are happening from community to community, town to town, city to city, state to state, and country to country. I want to DIVE DEEP into these core issues in the hopes of developing BETTER SOLUTIONS. Since my college students want to discuss these topics in greater depth, I want to provide all of my LISTENERS to these podcast shows more opportunity to not only discuss these sensitive issues but share their SOLUTIONS as well to these issues. Just the fact that Deion Sanders is HeadCoach of a major Division I school - Colorado University - in the Pac 12 and next year in the BIG 12, HeadCoach Deion Sanders is one of FEW Black Head Coaches in the higher level of conferences in college football today. Last week, HeadCoach Sanders took his young and new team of Colorado football team and coaches and beat TCU in one of the most entertaining games to start the college football season. Few so-called sports experts selected the Colorado Buffalos to win this game, but Deion and his players did - in a dramatic and shocking way! In this show, I further highlight how Deion will CHANCE College Football FOREVER primarily because of his message to the athletes today and to the BELIEF that ANYONE can succeed if they TRULY BELIEVE!! Here is SHOW #75: SUPREME COURT RULING on AFFIRMATIVE ACTION in which I discuss the recent decision about the court's ruling and the RAMIFICATIONS that each and every institution must change and adapt their policies in college admissions. Quite frankly, this decision was going to happen and many of us who have been in higher education for decades had a feeling that it was about to happen. Why? In my podcast, I breakdown the reasons why and being a person of color and a professor in academia, "race" will no longer be in the only criteria for evaluating future students into higher education. So now, it is a NEW DAY for higher education institutions, administrators, and directors to start seriously evaluating future students more HOLISTICALLY about their potential to succeed at their respective institutions and NOT simply enroll students just because of their race and trying to be "EQUITABLE" at their institution. This is SHOW #74 - "HALLE BAILEY and DISNEY'S LITTLE MERMAID" in which I discuss how this new movie became a GLOBAL BLOCKBUSTER overnight and broke cultural and ethnic barriers all in one UPLIFTING classic movie. In this movie, Halle Bailey plays the role of "Ariel" - a mermaid who wants to become a human and to marry her prince charming - Eric (sailor). The villainess, played by Melissa McCarthy, tries to stop it at all costs. What's so fascinating about this entire movie is that it is LIVE-ACTION, real people playing these roles instead of the ANIMATED 1988 cartoon-characters. Most importantly, it is Halle Bailey who is a woman of color being the BEAUTIFUL MERMAID!! She is stunning and so believable in this role while also making the audience forget that the original role of this mermaid was for a non-person of color. Talk about BREAKING BARRIERS and challenging our MISCONCEPTIONS & STEREOTYPES of lead characters in classic Disney movies, Ms Halle Bailey did it with STYLE, GRACE, BEAUTY, and BRAINS! In this podcast, I go much deeper in my analysis of race and ethnic relations because this CLASSIC DISNEY film helped to put race and ethnic relations on a GLOBAL SCALE with a POSITIVE message! Here is SHOW #73: MENTAL HEALTH and COLLEGE STUDENTS. In this show, I discuss the serious issues of Mental Health and Mental Illness among college students today. As I have observed over my 35 years of teaching college classes, more and more of my college students are experiencing varying degrees of mental health issues. Whether it is increased anxiety, nervousness, isolationism, or depression, a much larger percentage of my Gen Z college students are experiencing more mental health conditions which may lead to a serious mental illness. In fact, I even share my own mental health issues when I was a college student in the 1970s and 1980s and struggled through some tough issues individually. The major TakeAway from this Podcast show is to: (1) Stay connected with your college student, (2) Listen more intensely to your college student, (3) Encourage more dialogue with your college student, (4) Provide more positive interactions and engagement with your college student, and (5) Reassure your college student that it is okay to seek professional help for your individual mental health situation. Here is SHOW #72: RACE RELATIONS: UNDERSTANDING the IMPACT on YOUR CAREER and LIFE. In this show, I discuss the importance of the concept - Race Relations -- and why it is so important and impactful to today's college students and young professionals. Unfortunately, during the past few years because of COVID-19, many of my college students had to isolate themselves from other students yet this has significantly caused them to NOT RELATE well to other students who do not look like them or have a different history or lifestyle than them. That's why it is critically important for today's college student (after post Covid) to make an EXTRA EFFORT in engaging, interacting, and immersing oneself in another person's culture so he/she can develop the necessary skills in developing POSITIVE race relations now in college BEFORE he/she graduates and live in the REAL WORLD! In this show, I also share my own personal experiences when I was in college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio during the late 1970s in which I learned how to get along with other students who were completely different than me. In this show, I highlight the achievement of the actress and Woman of Color - Angela Bassett - along with the phenomenal new movie - WAKANDA FOREVER - in which was a #1 Blockbuster movie for 4 weeks in a row.  The day before I recorded this show, Angela Bassett was NOMINATED by the Academy Awards for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS for her role in WAKANDA FOREVER!! I therefore felt it was time to RECOGNIZE the phenomenal career of ANGELA BASSETT and what she brings as a person, individual, wife, mother, actress, and woman of color over her decades of work as an actress after graduating from Yale University with her Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) from Yale School of Drama in 1983! I believe that Angela Bassett along with her Oscar nomination and the movie WAKANDA FOREVER are a CELEBRATION of academic achievement, hard-work, and an appreciation of culture in which ALL of us need in these challenging times of race and ethnic relations. In this show, I highlight the STRATEGIES that each and every person can use to improve race relations in their community, town, city, neighborhood, college, university, institution, or company. In this episode, first, I commend my outstanding college students for their end of the semester projects in which they are developing new strategies to improve race relations on campus. I am thoroughly pleased with how my college students are passionate about trying to improve race relations and it is showing in their projects. Next, I provide the FRAMEWORK for improving race relations. Finally, I strongly suggest that every person who listens to this podcast can "BE A CHANGE AGENT" to improve race relations in their lives.
