The Radio Times Doctor Who podcast

Four years on from her surprise unveiling during the 2017 Wimbledon final, in this week's podcast we take a look back at how Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor, in a casting coup heard around the world.

Sharing our memories of the original event and looking at how she's lasted in the rule, it's a nostalgic jaunt into the past - before we move into the character's future.

Jodie Whittaker's departure from Doctor Who is just a rumour at the moment, but new reports have added more detail to the Thirteenth Doctor's supposed exit, suggesting that she'll be handing in her sonic screwdriver after two specials including one later in 2022.

In this week's podcast we analyse these new rumours, debating the possibility of a tie-in with the BBC's centenary celebrations (also in '22, natch) and also imagine how structural changes to series 13 could change how it tells a story.

Ahead of the 13th anniversary of River Song's first Doctor Who appearance on July 31st, we take a look back at the life and times (and spaces) of Alex Kingston's time-traveller and (sort of) companion to three Doctors.

Bursting onto the scene for 2008's Silence in the Library as a character with a mysterious past and a connection to David Tennant's Tenth Doctor, River went on to be a mainstay of the Matt Smith era before apparently waving the series goodbye in 2015's The Husbands of River Song.

But is that truly the end of the Doctor and River's love story, or could she be in for a reunion with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor? Only time will tell...

Rumour has it that Doctor Who's biggest plastic peril (apart from whatever was going on in Praxeus) could be set for a comeback, after fans spotted filming involving a bus advert titled "Autons".

So are the Nestene-controlled shop window dummies of death really about to face off with Jodie Whittaker? And what new take on the monsters (potentially tying into body image or fast fashion) could we be in for?

In this week's RadioTimes.com Doctor Who podcast we try our best to find out, while also delving into the surprising history of the Auton menace.
