In part two of the conversation, Jack and Martin Paige take a closer look at how people across Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes District can actually access mental health and wellbeing support.

Martin explains that the service supports children, youth and young adults dealing with mental health, addiction or wider wellbeing challenges, and importantly, you don’t need to know exactly where to start.

There’s no need for a GP or professional referral. Young people, whānau or anyone concerned about someone they know can reach out directly and the team will help work out the next step.

The support can range from connecting someone with specialist mental health services for anxiety or depression, through to practical help already available within the community.

It’s all about making the system easier to navigate and connecting people with the right support for their individual situation.

Martin Paige, Child and Youth Mental Health Guide from ADL, joins Jack to talk about Hononga Tika, a funded mental health navigation and support service helping connect young people with the right support at the right time.

Martin explains how the service works alongside local providers to make navigating mental health support easier, improve coordination and reduce the chances of young people falling through the gaps.

They also unpack the idea of a “no wrong door” approach, where young people and their families can reach out for help without needing to know exactly which service they need first.

This is part one of Jack’s conversation with Martin, looking at what’s available, how the system works and how Hononga Tika is helping create clearer pathways to support across our region.
