After Jacob encounters his brother Esau in peace, Esau returns to Mt. Stir bu Jacob settles outside of Shechem. In time, Jacob’s daughter Leah decides to socially interact with the daughters of the Canaanite city-state of Shechem. She is discovered by Shechem, the prince of the town and is raped. Shechem asks his father Hamor to get her for him as a wife. So, Hamor proposes with Jacob and his angry sons an arrangement for marriage offering citizenship to Jacob’s people. Dinah’s brothers deceive him with the additional requirement that Hamor’s people be circumsized. Hamor agrees and then goes and convinces his people to agree. On the third day of the inflammation and pain caused by the circumcision, Simeon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, enter the city and kill all the males and take all the property and women. Jacob rebukes his sons; but they exclaim they were justified because their sister was raped.
