This episode is Part 3 of our six part series, Myth and Media. It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these, hasn’t it? Today, we’re gonna be exploring talking about how most of the depictions of the Greek deities in modern media differ from their original counterparts in mythology.
Now, a quick disclaimer. The mythological versions of the deities mentioned in this episode are based predominantly on the various ancient sources as I learned about them at Uni as part of my BA in Archaeology (I did Mediterranean Studies as part of my Minor in History), and in my lifelong passion for Greek Mythology. As such, I make no claim that these are the “be all and end all” versions of these deities.
It is very likely that you may have heard different versions of the stories and therefore may have different mental images of these deities. I’m just telling my own versions, so if it isn’t exactly the way you heard them, then please bear that in mind.
Also, this episode of the Raven’s Grove features MAJOR spoilers for the following pieces of media:
· The “Percy Jackson” series and the “Heroes of Olympus” series, both by Rick Riordan
· The film “Clash of the Titans”
· The Disney film “Hercules”
As well as the following trigger warnings:
· Unwilling transformations
· Cruel and unusual punishment
So if any of those are in any way an issue for you, PLEASE, GIVE THIS EPISODE A MISS.
