In this episode, we speak with Professor Radcliffe Edmonds, the Chair of Greek, Latin and Classics at of Bryn Mawr University. We discuss some of the questions that came up in our reading of Euthyphro. We discuss the relation between Greek religion and the laws, how Greeks would have viewed Euthyphro and the prosecution of his father. We also discuss the relationship between the Greek gods, justice and fate. We also briefly contrast Euthyphro with Crito.

We try to understand what kind of person Euthyphro is, why he has decided to prosecute his own father for a highly unusual crime, and what Plato may be suggesting by presenting him as such an odd and self-assured figure. We also consider the parallels between Euthyphro and Meletus, Socrates’ own accuser, and ask whether the gods really disagree about justice, and what that would mean for any attempt to define piety.
