When it comes to seeing and seizing opportunities in real estate, mindset matters. Want to sell your home? Get a FREE home value report. Want to buy a home? Search all homes for sale. Recently, I came across a funny story with an interesting message in a local news magazine, so I wanted to share it with you all today. In the story, three contractors bid on a repair job in the White House. One is from Chicago, one is from Kentucky, and one is from New Orleans. All three contractors visit the White House to examine the fence they’re supposed to be working on. There, they are to meet with a White House official who will listen to their estimates. When they arrive, the New Orleans contractor takes out a tape measure and declares that the job will cost about $9,000—$4,000 for material, $4,000 for his crew, and $1,000 in profit for him. The Kentucky contractor examines the fence next. Once he’s done taking measurements and figuring out the expenses, he announces that he could do the job for $7,000— $3,000 for material, $3,000 for his crew, and $3,000 in profit for him. Finally, it’s the Chicago contractor’s turn to speak. He doesn’t take any measurements or do any figuring, but, instead, leans over to the White House official and whispers “$27,000.” “You didn’t even measure!” replies the incredulous official. “How did you come up with such a high figure?” The Chicago figure, like the others before him, explains the breakdown of his costs. He says: “$10,000 for me, $10,000 for you, and $7,000 for the Kentucky contractor, who we’ll hire to fix the fence.” The White House official agrees, and then the deal is done. Just like in this story, there are a lot of opportunities that will arise in real estate. When you see a good one, you should seize it. Of course, sometimes it takes a keen eye to see through to an opportunity’s true value. “ Where some may look at an old, dilapidated house and see no value at all, an experienced investor will realize that where there’s mold, there’s gold. ” For example: Where some may look at an old, dilapidated house and see no value at all, an experienced investor will realize that where there’s mold, there’s gold. I wasn’t always the kind of person who knew this to be true. It wasn’t until a mentor of mine taught me how to see hidden opportunities that I began to understand: It’s all about having the right mindset. If you want to win in real estate, you’ve got to observe the masses and do the opposite. You have to know how to find and take hold of the right opportunities.
