Bryan Fischer here with the Life and Liberty Minute. In 280 AD, a boy was born who grew up to become Saint Nicholas, one of the leaders of the early church. He inherited his parents’ wealth, which he gave generously but anonymously to the poor. Once a merchant in his hometown went bankrupt, and his creditors threatened to take his house and his three daughters, who would be sold into sex slavery. The man wanted them to marry to protect them from this, but couldn’t afford the dowry. Hearing about this, Nicholas threw a bag of money through the window in the middle of the night, and it landed in a shoe or a stocking drying by the fireplace. Nicholas did the same thing for all three daughters. This is the origin of the tradition of midnight gift-giving and stockings hanging by the fireplace. So, yes, Virginia, there really was a Saint Nicholas. Merry Christmas!
