Commodities and equities have historically had similar returns and volatility yet commodities as an asset class seem to be overlooked. Investors were interested in commodities up until the financial crises when they performed very well. Over the past 10 years, many investors have doubled down on equities and largely forgotten commodities. Recently, commodity performance has investors looking at the asset class again. How can history be a guide?

Just two years ago, media had zero coverage of inflation as a topic of interest. Now, multiple stories appear every day about how inflation is affecting the global economy, consumers and business. Recent events are even further accelerating the transition to an inflationary environment.

Concepts such as “contango” and “backwardation” in commodity futures markets are not well understood, and they have a significant impact on realized returns for investors. How can the negative effects of contango (and possible benefits of backwardation) assist investors in a diversified commodity portfolio, and what are they telling the market about supply and demand?

Gold stands out as a store of value for investors over hundreds (and perhaps thousands) of years. How does gold function to preserve value for investors and possibly protect from inflation shocks?

Inflation is like Kryptonite for many of the traditional financial assets that investors typically use to diversify risk and return. How can diversified commodities help to mitigate the significant risks posed to both stocks and bonds from rising inflation?

Copper production is geographically concentrated, with Chile producing roughly 40% of the world’s raw copper ore for use in the global economy. Chile just elected a new president, and his leadership indicates a shift toward environmental and labor rights concerns going forward. What does this mean in terms of supply growth from the world’s largest source of this critical component in the global economy, as global demand is forecast to rise dramatically over the next decade?

Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022. The extent and duration of the military action, resulting sanctions and market disruptions in the region are impossible to predict, but could be significant and already have had a severe adverse effect on the region. Among other things, the conflict has resulted in increased volatility in the markets, disruptions to availability of certain commodities, commodity and futures prices and the supply chain globally. Recovery could take years.

Don’t look up! Like a planet-killing asteroid, inflation is here and no longer transitory – ignoring the problem will not make it go away. We discuss the myriad sources of current inflation and why “transitory” no longer applies to this portfolio concern for the next several years.
