I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the thought provoking kōrero from Hohepa Thompson aka (Hori).

Hori took the stage at Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi Taitoko – Levin, with the title of his presentation being The Art Of Taking the Mimi! 

He shares with us his struggles in his younger days, the way he used to be like a bull to a red flag, and how nowadays, he likes to tackle scenarios from more of a comedic, piss take point of view to raise awareness and make an impact.  And as we know, he definitely makes an impact.

I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the inspriational story of  Suz Taana.  

This episode is special to me, as Suz is my little sister, so I am so proud of her for taking the stage to share her story – especially as she is TERRIFIED of public speaking, but she did it and we all felt her words.

Suz took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Taitoko - Levin, to share her journey through life.  She shares how she knew from an early age that she wanted more for her life, and the day she played with the toy medical kit, planted the seed for her to enter the medical profession as a Māori Nurse.   She shares her experiences of anxiety as a child, and the mamae she felt seeing her own daughter displaying the same signs, giving her the strength to create a better life for her whānau. 

She shares the mamae and frustration she felt when she wasn’t able to come home for our Dad’s tangi.  This is a heartfelt episode, thank you for being vulnerable and brave my sis, I love you x

 Here is Suz’s story...

 

Ko Suz tōku ingoa, ko Ngāti Porou tōku iwi.
Growing up in Cannons Creek, Porirua, like many of us, I experienced challenging times throughout my life.

I was driven to give back to my community, so studied and graduated as a Māori Nurse at Whitireia Polytechnic. I am now working as a nurse in the Outback of Australia caring for the indigenous community, and making a difference.

I am usually behind the scenes at Real Talk as admin, answering your emails and keeping the comms flowing smoothly, so being on stage is stepping right out of my comfort zone, but I’m ready to share my story.

Māmā to Maia rāua ko Tāwhiao, I want to show my tamariki and our rangatahi that they can achieve anything they put their minds to.

I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the vulnerable and moving kōrero from Manahi Te Hiakai Gardener.

Manahi was one of our rangatahi speakers at Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi Taitoko – Levin, and we were all so blessed to hear him and share space together.

Manahi is a 22-year-old Māori male broadcaster, radio host and announcer. He is very passionate about his mahi teaching Te Reo Māori to mainstream educators.

Manahi’s kaupapa is about counting your blessings in your life.  He shares with us his experience with living with Dyspraxia and also about how being connected to his whakapapa is his superpower.

She vulnerably shares with us her beautiful experiences of being whāngai, the struggles she experienced with bullying, and her blossoming career in music and performing arts as an indigenous wāhine.  She even busts out for the first time, her new compilation!

I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the powerful words of wisdom from Nix Adams.   

Nix took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Waikato, to share her journey with addiction, abuse and grief.  She shares how she made a conscious choice to make a change, with a goal to see her tamariki again after being separated from them.  She knew that the hurt and the pain could continue to own her and control how she was to live her life, her behaviours, habits, and identity.  

She now proudly has her kids full time, and it was awesome to see her daughter Russia sitting in the audience by her māmās side.  Nix has definitely utilised her experiences, challenges and obstacles to create a pathway to help others on their journey through life too, just by being her awesome self.

Nix Adams is far more than an influencer. Nix shot to fame by being completely authentic in sharing her day-to-day life, the good, the bad, and the hilarious!

 

She inspires so many by sharing her journey, everything from DIY gardening tips to motivational & healthy inspiration through her weekly Wellness Wednesday updates.

She also uses her platform to share and promote NZ businesses on her monthly ‘Supporting Small Businesses’ live videos on her Facebook page CWK.

 

Nix has just been awarded the TV Personality of the Year in the New Zealand Television Awards 2022 – get it girl!

Kia Ora my name is Jade. I whakapapa back to Ngāti Hāua but grew up in a little place called Reporoa. Growing up in a little town you learn to appreciate every opportunity and everyone around you.

 

I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility to be a good role model, leader and confidant for not only my whānau but everyone around me.

 

I am on a journey of healing and self-discovery and I want to inspire Rangitahi and encourage them to believe in themselves and believe that anything is possible. Life is never easy but how we faced up to those challenges can help define who we are.

Lucy has been with our Real Talk whānau from the very beginning as our entertainment, blessing us with her beautiful voice and energy.  It has been a blesssing and beautiful to witness her blossom into who she is today, a strong wāhine Māori.  

Lucy  took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Waikato, sharing her struggles, her trials, her tribulations, her time as a contestant on Australian Idol alongside Stan Walker, her mental health and how connecting to her Māoritanga, and her whakapapa, has been an integral part of grounding her, and forming her identity.

 

Here is Lucy’s story...

 

Lucy Johnson is a beautifully authentic wāhine Māori, and a very talented musician. We are so lucky to have her not only perform at all our Real Talk events, but also to have had her share her story with us at Real Talk Waikato.

Lucy is an advocate for growth, finding comfort in discomfort and empowering others through words -spoken and sung 🎶. 

“Being scared and doing it anyway has been the biggest gift I’ve ever given myself.”

Tiare took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Waikato, sharing his empowering story of his strong connection to his Māoritanga, his whakapapa, and how easily life can go off track if you are living it for others and not staying true to you for you.  

He shares with us his entrepreneurial journey and how being aligned and passionate about what he does, has led to a sense of freedom and flow in all aspects of his life.  He is right where she is meant to be and shares his wisdom and knowledge with others through his coaching.

 

Here is Tiare’s story...

 

Tiare Tawera is a mindset and identity shift coach, empowering others to create strong intentions, dive into subconscious blocks and manifest their next level of success.

 

“Artist. Orator. Actor. Entertainer. Bodybuilder. Kapa haka champion. Viral (and controversial) internet meme. Fitness guru. Entrepreneur. Life coach. And talking sponge.

Toi Te Ora presenter Tiare Tawera seems to have crammed a lot into his 33 years.

Having worked on and off in the television industry for almost two decades now, he has pretty much become part of the furniture at Māori Television, appearing in such shows as The Ring Inz, Nanakia, Tawera Fitness and, of course, Pukana, the long-running Māori-language children’s entertainment programme which he joined as a presenter at the age of 18.

 

Currently on screen presenting the lifestyle series Toi Te Ora alongside co-host Pohoira Hughes-Iopata, these days Tawera fits in any TV work he might pick up around running his own business, Tawera Coaching & Mentoring.

 

“I loved helping people transform their lives, but after they finished their programme with me they would often put all the weight back on,” he says. “So I started to study mindset.

“Long story short, I now help people gain more internal clarity – and the by-product of that is the losing of weight, making more money and things like that.””

I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the extremely vulnerable and life changing story of Dallas Adams. 

Dallas took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Ahuriri in Napier, to share his journey with addiction, abuse and grief.  He made a conscious choice to make a change.  He knew that the hurt and the pain could continue to own him and control how he was to live his life, his behaviours, habits and identity.  He wanted to turn his pain, experiences, challenges and obstacles to create a pathway to help others on their journey through life.

Here is a whakatuaki that Dallas shared with us on the night:

Tama tū tama ora; tama noho tama mate.
He who stands lives; he who sits, perishes. 

(An active person will remain healthy, while a lazy one will become sick). 

Here is Dallas’s story...

“Dallas Rahui Te Ahuru Adams is a survivor of sexual abuse and decades of drug and alcohol dependency, but it was through physical strength and fitness that he overcame his past.

 The 37-year-old is Aotearoa’s most-capped F45 member, attending more than 1000 classes. But it’s his inner strength that defines his identity.

“F45 has really been a blessing, a huge blessing. If this wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he told The Hui.

“I wanted to start rebuilding the foundations that I didn’t know I had which helped me stay consistent and helped me go through all the pain.”

Adams came at a crossroads in his life but said joining F45 was an awakening for him in his life. Since signing up in 2018, he’s dropped over 20kgs and is now five years sober.

Adams now works as a health coach at Health Hawke’s Bay, helping others to make positive changes in people’s lives.

“It’s mahi that’s meaningful. So I look forward to helping others in that way,””

Jonique proudly and gracefully took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Ahuriri in Napier, sharing her story of wisdom, love, heartbreak and hope.  Some of her kōrero she has never shared before, so we are extremely priviledged to have her share her story with us on the Real Talk stage. 

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the power, beauty, strength and the inspriation that Jonique is to many.  Ngā mihi nunui rawa atu ki a koe, i ngā wā katoa e hoa.

Here is Joniques story...

Kia ora e hoa mā,  

Above all I am a māmā of three beautiful boys, wife to my handsome Samoan husband and a proud wahine Māori. We reside in the beautiful Kahungunu however I hail from the mighty East Coast where I was born and bred. Our whānau homestead sits neatly on Waiapu Road. 

Waiapu road – The road that leads me home was inspired by my love for my whakapapa and my tūrangawaewae. In an ever-changing world, those parts of me remain unchanged. In an ever-challenging world those parts of me remind me of the strength within me and in the lineage behind me. I run this business on my own from beginning to end, on my own. I work full time as a Guidance Counsellor at a Kura Kaupapa Maori and I also study part time as well. 

Waiapu Roads range will always be to whakamana tangata. They are a source of empowerment for me. It’s my hope that it can be a source of pride and empowerment for you too.
