Tell Us How You Really Feel
What happens when spiritual philosophy meets beatmaking? Kershawn Tha Don answers this question through her soulful productions and community-building efforts, guided by her core belief that "love is the highest vibration."
The Long Beach-based producer takes us through her musical evolution, from singing in a Baptist church choir to performing with Beat Cinema on Coachella's prestigious Gobi Stage in 2023. "Music is so important in those spaces because it sets up the atmosphere... to open up your spirit to receive," she reflects, revealing how her spiritual foundation influences her creative approach.
Kershawn's journey into beatmaking began in 2008, experimenting with Fruity Loops during night shifts as a CNA after being inspired by 9th Wonder's production on Little Brother's "The Listening." Her artistic progression unfolds through albums like "Union Electric" (2020), which she describes with charming candor as her "cringe album" made without overthinking, and "Butter" (2023), crafted primarily using the Koala app and SP-555.
Beyond her own productions, Kershawn has created vital space for women in music through "Ladies Love Loops," a live music series showcasing female producers, singers, MCs, and DJs. "I did it to expose everybody to each other for collaboration," she explains, highlighting how building community remains central to her mission.
The conversation takes an exciting turn when Naj Ahead joins to discuss their forthcoming collaborative album "He's My Muse," dropping in October 2025. This project promises a modern take on neo-soul with Erykah Badu-inspired vibes, complete with limited edition physical copies featuring a lyric booklet. "It's a love story and it goes from the beginning to the end," Kershawn shares, noting it's designed for "nostalgic old souls."
Whether you're a beatmaker, a fan of underground hip-hop, or someone who believes in music's power to build community, this episode offers rare insight into creating authentically while lifting others up. Follow Kershawn's journey here: @ThaDonKershawn and Naj Ahead's journey here: @Najahead discover why love truly is the highest vibration.

What does it mean to build ‘a happy hOHM’ —not just a physical structure, but a spiritual sanctuary within yourself? Dom Cruz and TeedotEinsof explore this profound question through their collaborative masterpiece "a happy hOHM."
From the first whispered wind chimes of "Peace, Peace" to the triumphant reflection of "Spring Equinox," this album invites you into an intimate space where vulnerability becomes strength and honesty becomes healing. The project's title, deliberately spelled h-O-H-M, connects the concept of home with the universal sound "ohm"—suggesting that true home extends beyond physical space into spiritual resonance.
Through minimalist production that cradles confessional lyrics, Dom Cruz opens his heart about fatherhood, personal growth, and the complex journey toward self-acceptance. "I don't know if I'm enough, I just hope they feel the love," he admits on the album's closing track, articulating the universal fear we all face. TeedotEinsof’s & DOM’s soulful production creates the perfect foundation—sometimes meditative, sometimes raw and gritty—capturing every emotional shade of the human experience.
What sets this album apart is its emotional courage. In a world where men are often discouraged from expressing vulnerability, Dom and Teedot create a safe space for listeners to confront their own feelings. From the street narratives of "1000 G's" (featuring the late Pilla) to the spiritual awakening of "Plant Seeds," the album refuses to fragment the human experience into separate boxes, instead acknowledging how pain, joy, struggle, and transcendence coexist within us all.
The Love Supreme California collective shines throughout, particularly on the standout posse cut "Tribal Chiefs," demonstrating the power of community in artistic expression. But even surrounded by collaborators, the heart of this album remains intensely personal—a testament to what happens when artists strip away pretense and speak their truth.
Listen to "a happy hOHM with intention. Sit with it. Let it wash over you. This isn't background music—it's a conversation, a confession, an invitation to reflect on your own journey toward building something beautiful within yourself. Purchase Cassette & CDs here. Grammy-nominated instrumentalists, underground innovators, and boundary-pushing creators—the women of beat making deserve your attention. After a brief hiatus, I'm back with a special episode that travels across continents to bring you the sounds of female producers who are revolutionizing music production but aren't getting their proper recognition.
The journey begins with MetalFlowerz, a seasoned beat maker who drops gems about her creative process. She describes inspiration as coming "like waves" and shares how she finds creative sparks in everyday moments—from nature to playing with her children. Her perspective on overcoming writer's block offers wisdom applicable beyond music: "When I get stuck, I just go back to normal mode. That's where you will find things will come to you."
From there, we embark on a global expedition of sound. We visit Sarah, The Illstrumentalist, whose Grammy nomination speaks volumes about her talent. We travel to Baltimore for LeXus aka AkousticFunkbot "Foodie Fingers," swing by California to experience Illixie's "Secret Garden," Philadelphia's JEWELSSEA and drop into Austin where Meddah delivers the captivating "Miracle." The musical voyage continues through Shitao (Paris, France), Lauren and Gnarley (United Kingdom), Mujo (Hungary), and before concluding in Siphon (Argentina) with Anto Pla's distinctive rhythms.
What strikes me most about these women is not just their technical prowess, but how each brings a unique voice and perspective to beat making. Their styles range from soulful and melodic to experimental and boundary-pushing, proving there's no single "female sound" but rather a rich tapestry of creative expression. As I exclaim throughout the episode: "This is fire!"
If you're looking to expand your musical horizons and support women who are changing the game, this episode is your essential guide. Check out each artist's full catalog, subscribe to their platforms, and spread the word. These beat queens deserve spots on your playlists and in conversations about who's shaping the future of music production. Let's give them their flowers while they can still smell them.
