By popular demand, each day’s show is now posted in two separate segments.

Carmen talks with Ben Johnson from the Acton Institute about the summit in Vietnam between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jung-Un. The President observed that “sometimes you have to walk.” By this he explained why he walked away from the table and the pace people can expect the talks to follow. The goal remains denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The President made it clear that sanctions will not be lifted in advance of substantiated progress toward that goal.

Carmen and Ben also discuss the President’s response to a journalist’s question about Otto Warmbier at the press conference. Certainly the President is aware of the conditions endured by millions of North Koreans and foreigners held captive there.  So why give Kim Jung-Un a pass?  What can be said is this: Vietnam makes an interesting case study of a communist nation AND economic powerhouse. No wonder Kim wanted to meet there.

Turning toward issues at home, Carmen addresses the move by the United Methodist Church General Counsel to uphold the Church’s teaching on gender, sexuality and marriage.

Carmen talks with missionary turned lawyer turned author turned missionary Justin Whitmel Earley about his new book, The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose in an Age of Distraction.  They talk through the four daily and four weekly habits we all need to cultivate in order to cut new grooves that lead to the life God intends.  Each habit corresponds to both the love of God and love of neighbor – and those who make these habits the common rule of life find real joy.

The daily habits are:

* kneeling prayer at morning, midday and bedtime (there’s something about doing something physical that’s out of the ordinary that creates a change in the way we pray and think about praying),

* one meal with others, (yes, every day)

* one hour with phone off (yes, while you’re awake) and

* Scripture before phone (yes, really and yes, everyday and yes, substantively).

The weekly habits are:

* one hour of conversation with a friend (real conversation, at one sitting),

* curate media to four hours (curate means you’re consciously choosing sources and content of ALL media),

* fast from something for 24 hours (you could fast from food, social media, screens, biting your nails…its about discipline), and

* sabbath. (I’ve done entire programs on this topic – I’m thinking specifically about the conversation I had with Ruth Haley Barton and her book, Invitation to Retreat: The Gift and Necessity of Time Away with God)

And each of the habits is expressed in relationship to God and to neighbor.

Rounding out the day, Carmen talks with Travis Wussow from the D.C. office of the ERLC. They discuss the Senate’s failure to pass the Born Alive Protection Act, trends related to abortion in America and then turn their attention to resources available for those responding to the Abuse of Faith series exposing widespread sexual abuse by leaders in churches affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Hitting the headlines with The Heritage Foundation’s Tommy Binion, Carmen asks Tommy to comment on the rarity of the President and Vice President of the United States both being out of the country at the same time. They discuss the nation’s succession plan and the reality that on this day, the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, is the highest ranking government official on U.S. soil.

They discuss the impending release of the Mueller report and other matters.

Turning to another headline, Carmen asks, “Would things be better without kids?” Imagine a world without people. Is that a utopian or dystopian vision? That is actually a matter of your worldview.

Do you think people are on earth on purpose and for a purpose or do you think people are on earth by a combination of matter, time and chance – and, therefore, doing more harm than good to the planet – draining its resources, polluting its environment, driving other equally valuable species to extinction, causing the climate to change in irreparable ways, and ultimately bad? If you think the presence of people on earth is bad then you now have a member of the U.S. Congress representing your ideology. Her name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Would the world – or better said, the Earth – be better off without (more) children? That’s the conversation provoked by Congressman Alexandra Ostacio-Cortez’ claim, discouraging Americans from having a next generation. Carmen explores the value of children with Dr. Rosemary Stein.

If you’re wondering what the Bible has to say about the value of children, here are some verses for consideration:

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.— Mark 10:13-16  (In Matthew, addressing the same concern, Jesus says, “whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”)

Martin Niemoller was a prominent Lutheran pastor in Germany who spent seven years in a Nazi concentration camp because of his vocal opposition to Hitler. But Neimoller said after the war that in reality, he had spoken up too late.  Neimoller understood that leaders of Protestant churches and others has been complicit through their silence as the Nazi’s identified, segregated, labeled, robbed, separated, dehumanized, imprisoned, enslaved, persecuted and murdered millions of people.  The Holocaust did not begin with ovens, it began with ideas that became words against which no one took a stand. Neimoller’s quote has several variations as he offered it on several occasions in a number of settings.  Essentially, he said,

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

In today’s podcast, Carmen talks with Rabbi Evan Moffic about his new book, First the Jews: combatting the world’s longest running hate campaign.  This candid conversation includes a dose of theological self-awareness, story telling and how to practically stand up for religious liberty in our evermore pluralistic society.
