Carmen talked with Carl Nelson from Transform Minnesota about what Christians in Minneapolis are doing in response to George Floyd protests, riots and the needs of neighbors throughout the city. Specifically they highlighted the One Fund.

The National Bureau of Economic Research said yesterday that the United States is officially in a recession. The NBER defines a recession as a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. Bill English joins Carmen to talk about why its not a surprise, how its measured and what to expect. They also discuss last Friday’s surprise jobs’ numbers and the sober reality that we’re not out of the woods yet.  Then they take up the topic of a rising tide of lawsuits across the country related to Covid and the shutdown.

In the second half, Carmen talks with retired journalist Rosser McDonald about the spiritual transformation of one of Texas’ most notorious criminals, Rickie Smith. Rosser shares about Rickie’s life and how he came to faith in prison. Now, while serving out 3 99-year sentences, Rickie is leading fellow inmates to Christ and sows joy among the guards where he once sowed fear. The book is Real Prison, Real Freedom.

For more than four hours the world watched a black American church homegoing for George Floyd. Carmen comments briefly in today’s show open but more fully here.

Pastor Daryl Crouch joins Carmen to discuss the church’s responsibility to combat racism. And then she talks with Hunter Baker about a range of topic including the distinction we need to draw between the trademarked organization called “Black Lives Matter” and the comprehensive assertion of that black lives matter. They also discuss the cultural appropriation of African Kente cloth by Democrat members of Congress in an effort to demonstrate their solidarity with protesters.  Finally they deal with sloganism of “Defund the Police” and the very real need for police and criminal justice reforms.

Carmen talks with Peter Kapsner about how white parents are talking with their kids about the death of George Floyd and the realities we all wish were not true about the world in which we live. They also discuss the fact that its a privilege to even have the space and freedom to decide how and when and what to tell your kids. Black parents do not have that privilege. That’s really the point of privilege many white people in America simply do not understand.
