Relive Dan Eddy's 2019 chat with Bomber number 757, Geoff Blethyn, which originally aired on Essendon's 'Fabric of the Essendon Football Club' podcast series celebrating the club's 150-year anniversary in 2022. A local product from the Essendon district, Geoff Blethyn honed his goalkicking craft in a paddock at the back of the family home. Today, that paddock has been paved over & is now part of the Tullamarine freeway! After just two brief appearances at senior level, the 17-year-old Blethyn was thrust onto the VFL's greatest stage when he was a shock selection for the 1968 Grand Final side, replacing injured captain Ken Fraser. Unfazed by the pressure of the occasion, Blethyn kicked four of Essendon's eight goals. Alas, despite the team kicking one more goal than Carlton, the Bombers lost by three points; still the only Grand Final side to lose despite kicking more goals than their opponent. In 1972, Blethyn, now wearing his iconic black-rimmed glasses, became just the second Essendon player (after John Coleman) to kick 100 goals in a season (107 goals in 23 games). But then, despite having not yet reached the peak of his powers, Blethyn, at just 22, accepted a business opportunity & moved to Western Australia. He later returned to Windy Hill in 1976 & kicked another 39 goals, to finish his VFL career with 216 goals in 84 games. The following year, having moved to South Australia, he played in Port Adelaide's SANFL premiership team.  Blethyn relives all this & also provides a lesson in goalkicking which every budding sharpshooter needs to hear.  This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Essendonians, the EFCPP&OA and daneddybooks.com.Go Bombers!

Bomber number 716, Russell Blew, was a star wingman during the 1960s, a decade that saw Essendon play off in three Grand Finals. He was a key player in the 1962 & 1965 premiership victories, and he narrowly missed a third flag in 1968 when the Bombers fell three points short of Carlton in the Grand Final. Blew finished runner-up to Ken Fraser in the 1964 Crichton Medal count, a year when he represented Victoria in State footy. A former captain of the under-19s, Blew was entering his prime years by the mid-1960s, but a knee injury in round five, 1966, saw him miss most of the next two years, before he recovered to play every game in 1968. Then, at just 26, he accepted an offer to captain-coach VFA club, Waverley, in 1969, departing Windy Hill after 125 games (1960-68). In 2002, Blew was selected at number 56 in the top 60 'Champions of Essendon'.This podcast is proudly brought to you by the Essendonians and the Essendon FC Past Players & Officials Association.
