After a long hiatus, Reel Whirled, the radio show of UBC FilmSoc, is up and running again with your host Jin and guest star Ezri Boehm. This week, we're talking about Metropolis (2001) and the battle between Fritz Lang and Tezuka Osamu (not really though).

Dora and Dama interview Vancouver-based director and animator Kaho Yoshida about her new short film, Michi, which is screening in the Reel2Real Festival. We discuss Kaho's love for stop-motion animation and explore how her experience as an immigrant impacted her work. It's also the first time we have a phone interview with a director, so we're very excited!

Based on the finale programming, Dama and Dora discuss the genre that is cop movies. We talk about the twists and turns of the genre and everything it has to offer.

Action, drama, comedy, we bring it all in our Oscars extravanganza - if you consider four people in a studio to be these things, cause we do!

Joined by UofT film student Lily, Dama and Dora discuss Film Society's upcoming Sandwiched Club Night, programmed by the UBC Jewish Student Association. We talked about Annie Hall and Woody Allen followed by an illuminating conversation about Jewish experiences and representation in film.

Dama and Dora discuss black centric films and representations in honor of Black History Month. We discuss the cultural significance of John Singleton's groundbreaking Boyz n the Hood and Quentin Tarantino's glorious Django Unchained and drop some fresh fun facts in the process.
Considering the lack of representation of minorities in the film industry, it is always important to celebrate and acknowledge these stories whether they are as exhilarating as Django's or as real as Tre's. And when is there a better time to do this than Black History Month?

With the impending trilogy marathon hosted by the UBC Film Society, Dama and Dora discuss the cinematic and cultural influences of JRR Tolkein's monumental series The Lord of the Rings. Guided by hilarious dialogue and an interview with the UBC Science-Fiction and Fantasy Society's resident LOTR expert, journey with us through the fantastical nuances and complexities of this epic series.
