There is a deep but often hidden enemy of the spiritual life: the love for the honour of men. This internal desire, rooted in selfishness and the need to dominate, often stands against the very truth we are called to live and teach. It is the reason many shrink back from proclaiming God's Word boldly and sincerely.
In this message “The Reproach of Christ”, Pastor Jeffrey Walter confronts this enemy explaining that there are many who will not like the preaching of true doctrine and stand strongly against it as persecutors. To avoid this persecution, there is a tendency to cower and not share discovered truths. However, true spiritual maturity is marked by the overcoming of self-preservation, the willingness to be misunderstood, and the courage to speak the truth without compromise. Using diverse scriptures, Pastor Jeffrey Walter teaches on how best to deal with persecutions and calls on believers to bear Christ’s reproach—to suffer shame, misunderstanding, or rejection for the sake of truth.
Just as Jesus did not seek to preserve Himself before men, we too are called to not fear men or crave their honour. We must not fear what men will say or think in the sharing of our faith. We must come to the place where we are willing to do the will of God, no matter what men think of it. May the Lord help us.
Key Scriptures:
Hebrews 13:11-14 KJV
[11] For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. [12] Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. [13] Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. [14] For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
Matthew 5:38-42 KJV
[38] Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: [39] but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [40] And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. [41] And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. [42] Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
